When Wang Yangming came to Guiyang Academy with his luggage and started the work of the academy, another problem appeared in front of him, which made his joy instantly cloudy. 
In the fourth year of Zhengde (1509), Wang Yangming officially lectured on his mind at Guiyang Academy. But Guiyang Academy is different from Longgang Academy after all. Longgang Academy is its own field, and the content and form of teaching can be based on one's own ideas. However, Guiyang Academy is officially run, and the people who come to study are all candidates for scientific examinations, and they are all eager to study, take the imperial examination, and become a big official. If you want students to realize their ideals, you need to talk about Zhu Zi's science, and your own mind system is not very mature, and many views are completely contrary to Zhu Zi's science. When Wang Yangming explained this to Xi Yuanshan, Xi Yuanshan stroked his beard and laughed, and said to him, "Tell me what you want to talk about the most." So Wang Yangming was relieved to talk about his "unity of knowledge and action". He did not oppose his "unity of knowledge and action" to Zhu Xi's view, but used it as a tool for correction. He pointed out that if students want to learn Tianli by reading the books of the sages first, and then go to work. In the long run, everyone will develop a problem, that is, they are the best in the world, and once they want to do it, they will be helpless. He hopes to change this problem of readers. So he put forward four requirements for learning: the first is to aspire and make up the determination to be a sage; the second is diligence, which is the only way to be a sage; The third is to make mistakes, there will be mistakes when you do them, and you will have to change them if you make mistakes; The fourth is to be honest with each other, and to be honest with each other, and to speak up for kindness.
In fact, this is the old Confucian method: to gain oneself through emulation and introspection, and then to become a sage. The sages here are those who are free in mind and have control over themselves. Judging from these four points, Wang Yangming's thinking is to bypass Zhu Xi and return to the roots of Confucianism. If the "unity of knowledge and action" is just a prelude to Yangming's psychology, then the real touching thing is "to conscience". Soon, Wang Yangming's career ushered in a major turning point, and "to conscience" was about to be brewed in his political practice.
When Wang Yangming was lecturing at Guiyang Academy, a major event happened in the capital: Liu Jin, the eunuch of Wang Yangming, was executed by Ling Chi for rebelling against the East Window. After all, evil does not prevail over good, and the government and the opposition are cheering together! In the winter of this year, the imperial court issued a letter of appointment to Guiyang: Wang Yangming was appointed as the commander of Luling County, Jiangxi. Wang Yangming finally ended his three-year exile in Longchangyi. On the day I left, both sides of the post road were full of people who came to see him off. There are the Miao aborigines who cultivated with him, the students who listened to his lectures on psychology, and the two respected nobles Xi Yuanshan and Mao Yingkui. Wang Yangming stayed one step at a time, saying goodbye to everyone. In the past three years, he has been discouraged, disappointed, and even more entangled and struggling. In the past three years, he has stepped on the poisonous miasma and thorns all over the dragon field, and also stepped on the swamp full of haze in his heart, and finally left the hesitant and depressed self far behind. It was also here that he understood the threshold of life and death, and strengthened his lifelong ambition - to dedicate his body and mind to the way of saints and the study of saints. At this moment, Wang Yangming had mixed feelings and was full of emotion. This mood can probably only be expressed by a poem by Li Taibai. After saying goodbye to the Peach Blossom Garden and the ivory tower, Wang Yangming returned to the stage of officialdom. The Tao of Longchang's enlightenment and the learning of Guiyang now need Wang Yangming to prove with practice whether they can stand the test. The last county magistrate of Luling resigned and left office by himself, and from this point of view, the government affairs here are not simple. The first thing Wang Yangming did after he arrived was to talk to the officials and servants in the yamen to learn about the situation in Luling. To sum up, Wang Yangming found that Luling is indeed quite chaotic: first, the people of Luling are particularly fond of complaints, especially the number of complaints and petitions is particularly large, and at most they can receive hundreds of cases a day. Second, the tax in Luling is very high, and in just three years, the tax has quadrupled. 3. The urban planning of Luling is very problematic, the houses are close, and large fires often occur. Wang Yangming carefully analyzed the results of his investigation, and he believed that the reason why the people of Luling liked to sue should have something to do with taxes. So he grasped the main contradiction and started his work. After investigation, the tax in Luling County was not so high before, but since the court commissioner surnamed Wang came three years ago, the tax began to rise gradually. Wang Yangming is an understanding person, but what is even more commendable is that he is still a righteous official. He realized that this commissioner surnamed Wang was the culprit, so he prepared an official document applying for tax reduction and exemption for the people of Luling County. At the end of the official document, he wrote: "If he has the crime of delaying and violating the law, he will stop sitting in his own position and return to the field, thinking that he will be willing to do his duty." This Wang commissioner was afraid of Wang Yangming's family background and influence, and said helplessly to the governor of Ji'an Prefecture: "I see that there is a problem with the tax in Luling, so let's exempt it for the time being, and I will talk about it when Wang Yangming leaves." "This battle is a victory for Wang Yangming's conscience, he is not like the previous county orders, he only looks up, regardless of the life and death of the people below. He completely stood on the position of the people, used his own righteousness and means to achieve his own goals, and guarded his conscience. As soon as this move was completed, the people were all grateful for Wang Yangming's kindness, and the problem of complaining was naturally solved, and even the problem of urban planning became much easier. Wang Yangming struck while the iron was hot and issued a notice: out of the need for the people to live and work in peace and contentment, the residents in Luling County need to raise a house renovation project. It turned out that when Wang Yangming inspected Luling County, he found that the construction materials of the houses in Luling were all wood, the lanes were narrow, and there were no brick walls to separate them. So he ordered the houses on the street to be set back to a three feet in order to widen the street and use it as a firebreak to evacuate the population; The shophouse is set back two feet to make a fire alley; Each household contributed a penny of silver to build a brick wall for the houses facing the laneway to isolate the fire. This initiative is by no means an image project, but a conscience project for the sake of the people. In order to implement this policy, Wang Yangming moved with affection and reason, mobilized famous people in the city to take the lead in doing this, and finally led the whole city to do this. The strategy is complex, but the truth is not: what is it? In fact, it is intentional, as a county order, as long as you are good for the people, you can think of the truth of doing any good thing for the people, and then do it. Judging from Wang Yangming's theory of mind, this is "to conscience". Luling is fortunate to be the place where Wang Yangming first showed his strength after he founded Xinxue. But Wang Yangming is a person who belongs to the big stage after all, in the eleventh lunar month of 1510, the thirty-nine-year-old Wang Yangming left Luling again and returned to the capital, to wait for a new appointment.
