Classics are classics

The TV series "Scout Hero", which is currently being screened, is a good drama, which is very exciting and real. The main plot and details of the play are mostly based on real historical materials, and refer to classic battles and reconnaissance battles that really happened on the Korean battlefield.

For example, there is such a plot in the play: In a major battle, Liang Chen, the head of the reconnaissance section of a division of the Volunteer Army, led a platoon of the reconnaissance company, especially a group of several highly skilled and courageous scouts, interspersed behind the enemy to cooperate with the attacking troops in front and attacked the enemy's headquarters.

This story is not fictional, it reflects a real battle example, which today we are used to calling the "Surprise Attack on the White Tiger Regiment".

So, what kind of unit is the White Tiger Regiment? Why did the volunteers surprise the White Tiger Regiment?

One. The surprise attack on the White Tiger Regiment was one of the most famous battles in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

In the late 50s of last century, the Peking Opera Troupe of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (later transferred to form the Shandong Peking Opera Troupe) wrote and performed a modern Peking Opera called "Surprise Attack on the White Tiger Troupe".

In June 1964, the Peking Opera "Surprise Attack on the White Tiger Troupe" went to Beijing to perform, and was highly praised and praised by the leaders.

In September 1972, the Peking Opera "Surprise Attack on the White Tiger Troupe" was made into a movie, which caused a great sensation after its national release and was included in the "Eight Model Operas".

In this way, the legendary battle plot of the "Surprise Attack on the White Tiger Regiment", as well as the brave and witty hero Yan Weicai, have since become famous all over the world and have become a classic known to women and children in that era.

The story of the surprise attack on the White Tiger Regiment took place on July 13, 1953, which was a battle in the summer counterattack campaign launched by the Volunteer Army on the entire front of Jincheng.

The Battle of Jincheng was the last battle to resist US aggression and aid Korea, and it was also the largest attack since the Volunteer Army switched to positional warfare. Originally, this battle could have been avoided, but it had to be fought because South Korea's Syngman Rhee "deliberately broke the armistice agreement."

In June 1953, the Korean armistice negotiations, which had lasted for nearly three years, were coming to an end, and both sides were making preparations for the signing. In the middle of the night on 17 June, the South Korean Syngman Rhee clique released 27,000 Korean prisoners of war from the prisoner-of-war camps under the pretext of "immediate release" and forcibly integrated many of them into the South Korean army.

This action undermined the agreement on the repatriation of prisoners of war that had just been reached in the armistice talks, made it impossible to sign the armistice agreement, and lost the guarantee of its implementation.

In order to combat the enemy's arrogance and push the enemy back to the negotiating table, the headquarters of the Volunteer Army decided to launch a summer counterattack campaign in the area south of Jincheng, with a view to completely defeating and hurting the enemy.

The 20th Corps was responsible for the specific implementation of the campaign, and the Corps divided its forces into three groups: left, center, and right, of which the 203rd Division of the 68th Army served as the main attack division on the right flank of the Western Group, and the task was to destroy the enemy's "Capital Division".

The "Capital Division" is the highest-ranking elite unit in Syngman Rhee's army, with three regiments under its jurisdiction, namely the 1st Regiment, the Mecha Regiment, and the 3rd Regiment. The task of the 203rd Regiment of the 607th Division of the Volunteer Army was to destroy the first regiment of the enemy.

Two. The first regiment of the enemy, the Volunteer Army used to call it the "White Tiger Regiment". It is called because the regimental flag, as well as the cap badges and epaulettes of cars, tanks and soldiers, are marked by a white tiger head.

In the Battle of Jincheng, the White Tiger Regiment was deployed in the most advanced and dangerous areas. If our 68th Army wants to wedge into the defensive depth of the capital division, it must first take down this roadblock.

In Syngman Rhee's troops, the White Tiger Regiment can be called the trump card of trump cards, the elite of the elite, not only is it well-equipped, but its personnel have also received American-style training, and its combat effectiveness should not be underestimated.

In September 1950, when the U.S. army invaded the north on a large scale, the regiment was the first to break through the "38" line and went straight to 325 kilometers with a single sword. After our volunteers entered the Korean War, they drove the US troops south of the "38th" line at once, but the White Tiger Regiment was like a nail, firmly entrenched in the position north of the "38th" line.

Therefore, the US generals, who had always looked down on the combat effectiveness of Lee's puppet army, looked at the capital division in a different light, calling it "the first honorary division in South Korea" and sending US military advisers to provide guidance.

Before the Battle of Jincheng began, after one year and seven months of painstaking management, the White Tiger Regiment built a plateau of about 48 square kilometers on the northern side of the "38th Parallel" and in North Korea that could be described as "impregnable" and "impregnable."

The White Tiger Regiment dug many tunnels on the mountain, and the rows of support points under the mountain were formed by covering ditches, trenches, tunnels, and bunker groups to form a network of semi-permanent strong fortifications. At least 3 and 9 barbed wire fences were also set up at the front of the fortifications, and there were mines, tripwires, horse rejections, and electric lightning on both inside and outside. At the same time, it was also supported by five howitzer battalions and a large number of tanks of the US army, and air support was even more on-call, with dozens or hundreds of planes coming at the same time.

In the face of such a strong enemy, it is necessary to fight hard and attack skillfully, and it is best to win by surprise. Therefore, the commander of the 203rd Division of the Volunteer Army, in accordance with the spirit of Deputy Commander Yang Dezhi's instructions and the suggestion of the political commissar of the 607th Regiment Su Ke before the war, decided to send a small detachment to insert behind the enemy when the campaign began to attack, and use the method of disguise and surprise attack to destroy the command center of the White Tiger Regiment of the Capital Division.

Three. There is no doubt that the surprise attack on the White Tiger Regiment, even if measured from today's perspective, is a very classic decapitation operation.

The battle, from the launch of the attack to the withdrawal from the battlefield, took only 13 minutes. Except for a few soldiers of the White Tiger Regiment of the enemy army, none of them escaped.

According to post-war statistics, 19 enemy soldiers were captured alive in this battle, 97 were killed, plus other enemies eliminated on the way to the attack, the surprise attack team organized by the 607th Regiment Reconnaissance Company of the 203rd Division of the 68th Army of the Volunteer Army killed a total of 223 enemy troops, and none of our reconnaissance teams **. This move created a miracle in the history of Chinese and foreign wars.

The miracle was created by the 13-member "Transformation Attack Team". They are: Zhao Shunhe (from Hebei), Zhang Lianxun (from Shandong), Wang Guisheng (from Inner Mongolia), Li Zhi (from Shaanxi), Shu Dechun (from Sichuan), Li Peilu (from Shaanxi), Bao Yuelu (from Sichuan), Huang Tongyu (from Sichuan), Zhou Fashi (from Hubei), Hou Shibin (from Hubei). In addition, there are two North Korean liaison officers, Han Dannian and Kim Dazhu, and the deputy platoon commander Yang Yucai is in charge of this special team.

Yang Yucai (May 26, 1926, 1999), a native of Mianxian County, Shaanxi, joined the army in April 1949, joined the party in May 1950, and participated in the Volunteer Army in June 1951.

Yang Yucai is 180 meters, deep eye sockets, high nose bridge, big shoulders and round waist, strong physique, and then put on an American-style officer uniform, put on a raincoat, and pinned a left *** with a holster around his waist At first glance, he really looks like a Yankee.

As a result, Yang Yucai disguised himself as an American adviser and walked in front, Han Dannian and Kim Dazhu could speak Korean and could deal well with the enemy's cross-examination, so they disguised themselves as liaison officers of the South Korean puppet army and followed on both sides, and the other 10 scouts also disguised themselves as South Korean puppet soldiers and "escorted US military advisers" with live ammunition.

Under the storm of the night, on the rough and muddy road, our scouts marched at the same time. They climbed over high mountains and over steep cliffs; They lie down in front of the power grid and roam the valleys; They crossed minefields and waded through rivers; They were able to evade interrogation by cleverly obtaining passwords; They stepped on mines by mistake and encountered enemy situations; They bravely broke into the enemy's nest and pulled out the tiger's head flag ......All this that happened in real battles is fully and meticulously shown in the TV series "Scout Heroes", which is thrilling and blood-pumping after watching.

Four. To this day, when military historians mention the battle in which the "White Tiger Regiment" was destroyed by surprise attack, they still speak highly of it, saying that it "disrupted the enemy's command system, broke its defense system, made the first contribution to the successful completion of the combat mission of the Western Group, and created a classic combat example in the history of special warfare in the world."

According to the Military History Research of the Academy of Military Sciences' "History of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (Volume II)", after Yang Yucai led the "chemical attack squad" to successfully fight a war and eliminate the headquarters of the White Tiger Regiment, the South Korean army "quickly broke out" and "soldiers discarded the first ammunition and fled in all directions." It was originally planned to defeat the "White Tiger Regiment" in three days, but the combat mission was completed in less than 12 hours.

From 20:55 on July 13 to the end of the battle at 8 o'clock on July 14, the Volunteer Army "completely annihilated the White Tiger Regiment and two battalions of the enemy mecha regiment, the 555th artillery battalion of the US army, captured more than 840 enemies, killed and wounded more than 3,000 enemies, captured 102 artillery pieces of various kinds, 13 tanks, 137 automobiles, 1,256 light troops, and captured 27 square kilometers of the enemy's position", so that our large army broke through the enemy's "Missouri" defense line relatively smoothly and advanced the front 36 kilometers to the enemy. He made a great contribution to the victory of the entire campaign.

The victory of the "surprise attack on the White Tiger Regiment" profoundly affected the battle situation on the Korean battlefield. The Chinese People's Volunteers have been making great strides all the way, speeding up the process of peace talks with their magnificent momentum, and exerting an important influence on winning peace talks as soon as possible. Twelve days later, on July 27, the United States was forced to sign the Korean Armistice Agreement.

After the battle, the reconnaissance detachment of the 607th Regiment was honored with collective special merit, and Yang Yucai was personally awarded the title of "first-class combat hero" by the Volunteer Army Headquarters, and was also awarded the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" and the "Golden Star Medal" and "Order of the National Flag of the First Class" by the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK. The other comrades of the squad all received awards for their meritorious service.

In the sixties and seventies of the last century, the famous modern Peking Opera and the movie "Surprise Attack on the White Tiger Regiment" are the condensation and reproduction of this battle example.

Today, nearly 70 years have passed since the story of the surprise attack of the reconnaissance squad of the Chinese People's Volunteers on the headquarters of the "White Tiger Regiment," and we who live in an era of peace and happiness still have not forgotten them.

The TV series "Scout Heroes", produced and distributed by Chunyu Film and Television, is the best example of the gold medal team teaming up with powerful actors to pay tribute to heroes. This TV series has reawakened our collective memory of resisting US aggression and aiding Korea, let us sit in front of the TV, pay tribute to the officers and men of the Chinese People's Volunteers and all those who contributed to the victory of the war, let the younger generation remember the arduous course and great victory of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, inherit and carry forward the spirit of resisting US aggression and aid Korea, remember that peace was not easy to come by, and cherish the beautiful life now.
