Oceans & Wetlands recently received an invitation to Reverse the Red[1] to announce that the first World Species Congress will be held on May 15, 2024, a 24-hour all-day virtual conference designed to encourage and catalyze commitment and action on species conservation.
At the 2008 World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) adopted Resolution 4Resolution 019, calling for a science-based, interdisciplinary and inclusive conference on the World Species Congress, highlighting the status of species and charting future processes for species conservation. As people work together to implement the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) signed on 19 December 2022, Reverse The Red's World Species Congress will serve as a new collaborative platform to move conservation action forward.
Attendees will hear from and connect with the voices of institutions, environment ministers, leaders of botanical gardens, aquariums and zoos, members of the Species Expert Group and the IUCN Species Survival Committee, non-governmental organizations and conservation practitioners, community leaders, biodiversity-conscious companies, wildlife and ecology scholars, youth, and anyone working to save species. The format of the meeting will include live panel discussions, problem-solving sessions, field trips and behind-the-scenes visits, interviews, and other means.
The World Species Congress will be fully funded by a number of sponsors, thus supporting the participation of all those interested in species conservation in a 24-hour conference** that brings together the wisdom and experience of all time zones and regions. All presentations will be presented in the original language with simultaneous translation or subtitles. In-person events will foster richer connections, deeper conversations, and broader reach. Organizations will announce specific commitments to save species as part of the Reverse Red Species Pledge to increase capacity or strengthen conservation efforts. A series of national events will discuss key next steps for countries to plan goals and actions around biodiversity conservation, and "Reverse the Red" will announce the awarding of the National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) medal at the World Conservation Congress in 2025 to recognize those that include inspiring success stories, inviting individuals and organizations to guide next steps to help conserve, Regional plans for duration and access to tools and resources were encouraged.
Registration will open on 7 February 2024, the day of reversing the biodiversity crisis.

Note: [1] Reverse the Red is an initiative of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (IUCN SSC) and others to provide tools and partnerships to unite stakeholders and promote conservation impacts. Thereby reversing the current negative trend for species survival highlighted in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species and Ecosystems, it also aims to inspire positive optimism and collaborative action to ensure the survival of all species on Earth, as well as ecosystems, and empower communities around the world to achieve this.
