The pork dumplings of the well-known food brand "Haibawang" are actually made of chicken and duck skin!
Recently, the Shanghai Municipal Market Supervision Department disclosed an administrative penalty information, Haibawang (Shantou) Food *** hereinafter referred to as "Haibawang") "pork dumplings" in the chicken or duck skin content is higher than pork, for false propaganda was fined 500,000 yuan.
On January 10, a reporter from Yangcheng Evening News contacted Haibawang as a consumer. The other party said that the incident happened in 2020, and it was mislabeled before, and then the label was removed from the shelves, and the "pork dumplings" were changed to "meat dumplings". However, the reporter's further investigation found that the matter was not as simple as mislabeling.
In order to reduce costs, duck skin replaces pork to make dumplings.
According to the administrative penalty decision, on January 7, 2022, the Shanghai Municipal Market Supervision Bureau conducted an on-site inspection of the Carrefour supermarket on the B1 floor of Longemont Shopping Mall, No. 1018 Changning Road, Changning District, and found that the frozen dumpling area of the supermarket was selling products such as the Haibawang brand "Haibawang (Selected Seasonal Vegetables) Jiatianxia Dumplings and Cabbage Pork" produced by Haibawang, whose product name is "Cabbage Pork Dumplings", but the pork content accounts for a very small proportion in the ingredient list. The parties are suspected of misleading claims about their products. On January 27, 2022, the bureau opened a case for investigation against the parties in accordance with the law.
After investigation, since November 2020, affected by the sharp increase in pork**, in order to reduce the cost of raw materials, the parties have greatly reduced the content of pork ingredients in 19 quick-frozen dumpling products such as "Haibawang Jiatianxia Cabbage Pork Dumplings 500g" to 378%-10.45%, and the content of chicken or duck skin in the ingredients of the above products is higher than that of pork, resulting in pork not being the main ingredient in the ingredients of the above dumpling fillings.
In order to gain a competitive advantage, Haibawang designs and produces product packaging by itself, and marks the words "Haibawang Pork Dumplings" as the product name in eye-catching fonts on the outer packaging of the above 19 quick-frozen dumpling products to publicize the product characteristics. At the time of the case, Haibawang sold the above products to supermarkets and other customers in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai through its Shanghai branch, and sold a total of 141 quick-frozen dumpling products of the above models90,000 packs, with a total sales amount of about 686 yuan60,000 yuan.
The bureau believes that the ingredients of quick-frozen dumpling products are the main characteristics of the product, and the product name is an important information to describe the product and provide consumers with knowledge and knowledge of the product characteristics. According to the bureau's investigation of other quick-frozen dumpling products on the market, operators in the quick-frozen dumpling industry usually use the main fillings and ingredients of quick-frozen dumplings as the product name. This practice gives consumers a high degree of trust in the information about the main ingredients in the product name and is also an important factor in the choice of the product for the consumer.
The chicken content of the above 19 dumpling products sold by Haibawang is much higher than that of pork, and the pork content of 11 of them is even lower than that of duck skin. Knowing that pork is not the main filling ingredient in the above-mentioned products, Haibawang still uses "Haibawang Pork Dumplings" as its product name, and Haibawang subjectively has the intention to mislead consumers. The product names such as "Haibawang Pork Dumplings" on the outer packaging of the products are marked with large eye-catching fonts, which are objectively enough to mislead consumers into believing that pork is the main filling ingredient of the above-mentioned quick-frozen dumpling products, and then lead to mispurchase.
The Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation believes that in order to improve product competitiveness and gain competitive advantage, Haibawang uses product names to falsely advertise product traits in violation of Article 8, Paragraph 1 of the Anti-Unfair Competition Law of the People's Republic of China, which stipulates that "business operators shall not make false or misleading commercial promotions about the performance, function, quality, sales status, user evaluation, and honors of their goods, so as to deceive and mislead consumers", so it made a decision to impose a fine of 500,000 yuan.
Sales are not good, and there are fewer and fewer supermarket displays.
On January 10, the reporter visited the market in Guangzhou to understand the situation. In the quick-frozen food area of a large supermarket in Tianhe District, more than a dozen large freezers are filled with dumplings, wontons, buns, finger cakes and other quick-frozen foods. According to the sales staff, the supermarket's quick-frozen food sales are good, and the brands and types are very complete. The reporter checked and found that dumplings and wontons alone occupied five or six freezers, and the main brands included Wan Chai Pier, Synear, Sanquan, Yuan Kee, Hewei, Haibawang, etc.
After repeated checks, the reporter found two Haibawang products in the dumplings sold in the supermarket, namely Haibawang Jiatianxia Sanxian Dumplings and Haibawang Jiatianxia Corn Pork Dumplings. The sales staff revealed that Haibawang's products sold well in the first two years, but now they are not selling well, and the display area is getting smaller and smaller.
From the ** aspect, dumplings with the same filling name, Haibawang products are cheaper. For example, the three fresh dumplings in the world are on sale, and the original price is 348 yuan specification 12 kg of dumplings, after the discount, only 218 yuan, and the same type of product costs thirty or forty yuan.
In response to the punishment by the Shanghai market supervision department, Haibawang's customer service said that it was because of the wrong label, and "pork dumplings" have been changed to "meat dumplings". However, during the visit to the supermarket, the reporter did not see the "meat dumplings" products, and the product names are usually cabbage pork dumplings, beef dumplings, mushroom pork dumplings, etc. When checking the ingredient list, the reporter did not find any brand of dumplings using duck meat as raw materials, including the Haibawang dumplings on sale.
In the end, the reporter found the "meat dumplings" said by Haibawang's customer service in a **. There are multiple categories of this product, such as "leek meat filling" and "mushroom meat filling" in Haibawang Jiatianxia. However, duck meat was not found in the ingredient list.
Some food bloggers said that duck meat is usually not used as filling, because duck meat is coarse, and it will have an earthy smell if it is not handled well. However, duck meat** is inexpensive or adopted by individual businesses. The reporter saw in a supermarket that the frozen "half duck" was marked with a unit price of less than 10 yuan per catty.
On the 10th, a reporter from Yangcheng Evening News also contacted Haibawang Shantou Company to reveal his identity for an interview. The relevant staff said that the matter has been dealt with, but did not respond to the current situation such as whether duck meat is still added to Haibawang dumplings. Immediately, the other party hung up**.
Coincidentally, there is the most pork in the beef balls.
The main reason for the Shanghai Municipal Market Supervision Bureau's punishment of Haibawang is that duck meat is the main ingredient in a product called pork dumplings, which will cause consumers to buy by mistake. The reporter's investigation found that the situation of "selling dog meat on the head of a sheep" seems to also appear in Haibawang's beef ball products.
In the survey, many consumers said that the quality and taste of Haibawang's products were poor, and they especially could not accept the situation that chicken was the first place in the ingredient list of beef balls. "(Eating) soft and lying on your stomach, you can only say that you get what you pay for. A consumer who has bought Haibawang beef balls broke the news on social **.
During a visit to the supermarket, the reporter found a "Sea Overlord Peeing Beef Ball". The ingredients marked in the ingredient list of this product are pork, beef, chicken, duck, drinking water, etc. Among them, the main ingredient of beef accounts for more than or equal to 8% of the net mass fraction of the product.
The ingredient list of another brand of peeing beef balls in the freezer next door shows: beef, pork, chicken, water, etc., and clearly indicates that the beef content is greater than or equal to 25%, pork is greater than or equal to 15%, and chicken is greater than or equal to 12%.
It is understood that China's "General Principles for the Labeling of Prepackaged Food of National Food Safety Standards" (GB 7718-2011) (hereinafter referred to as the "General Principles") has made clear provisions on the name and ingredients of prepackaged food. The General Principles mention that the various ingredients should be arranged in descending order of the amount added in the manufacture or processing of food; Ingredients that do not exceed 2% can be added in descending order. In other words, the ingredient that ranks first in the ingredient list is the ingredient with the highest content in the product. According to the ingredient list of the Sea King Peeing Beef Balls, pork has the highest ingredient content.
With regard to the name of food, the General Principles point out that the special name reflecting the true attributes of the food should be clearly marked in a conspicuous position on the food label. "If you don't look carefully, I really don't know that there are these doorways inside, since the pork ingredient comes first, it should be called peeing pork balls. A consumer who was buying hot pot ingredients questioned the sea overlord peeing beef balls.
Integrity is the foundation of enterprise development. Regarding the Haibawang incident, a consumer told reporters that as a Shantou person, every year during the winter solstice, the family will buy Haibawang's sesame rice balls, which is a kind of trust of Shantou people in the old brand. "I feel that this brand has a wide audience in Shantou and even Guangdong. He said that he hoped that Haibawang could manage the "Cantonese brand" signboard with heart, conscientiously do a good job in products, and live up to the trust of consumers.
At present, the reporter has reported the above situation to the market supervision department.
Link Sea Overlord has been fined many times.
The reporter combed and found that Haibawang products were detected with similar problems as early as 2016. In that year, Chengdu Haibawang Food was fined 40 for being found to have used duck neck skin, frozen miscellaneous oil and other raw materials to produce beef balls and shrimp dumplings as raw materials such as beef and shrimp meat440,000 yuan.
In 2022, the Shanghai Municipal Commission for the Protection of Consumer Rights and Interests purchased a batch of fish balls on an e-commerce platform and found that most of the product ingredients were "surimi" or "frozen surimi", while the main ingredient of "Haibawang Burst Pulp Small Fish Balls" was "chicken". In addition, Haibawang shrimp-flavored dumplings have been sampled and found to have excessive peroxide value.
Tianyancha APP shows that Haibawang (Shantou) Food *** was established in May 1994, the legal representative is Zhuang Zonglin, and the registered capital is about 1RMB 900 million, the business scope includes food production, food sales, frozen food, aquatic product market operation, etc., and is wholly owned by the British Cayman Islands Commercial Sea Overlord International Group.
