Recently,Compliance interactive columnReceived an inquiry from a company about whether the aerosol product is a pressure vessel. In this issue, we will make a brief interpretation of the product range of domestic pressure vessels around this issue.
1. Introduction to aerosols
Aerosol can be found everywhere in daily life, and there are household insecticide spray cansSpray aerosolsThere are also shaving foamsFoam aerosol。The difference between the two is the appearance and character of the ejector when used, and the foam aerosol ejecta is usually in foam form and is easily identified.

In the transport link,Spray andBubblesAerosols are classified as Class 2 dangerous goods listed in the United Nations TDG Regulations, and the relevant transportation information is shown in Figure 2.
Fig.2. Partial transport information of aerosols in UN TDG
As shown in Figure 2, although aerosols are listed items with their own UN numbers, the hazard category does not specify which sub-item of Class 2 gases they belong to. This mainly depends on the specific hazard characteristics of the contents of the aerosol, according to special regulation 63, the aerosol needs to be tested for its overall flammability before actual transportation, of which the flammable aerosol is classified as part 21 item, non-flammable aerosols are classified as 22 items.
Friendly reminder 1:According to Special Regulation 63, toxic gases are prohibited from being used as propellants for aerosols, in other words, aerosols UN1950 cannot be classified as part of section 23 toxic gases.
Friendly reminder 2:In order to perform their intended function, some aerosols contain other active ingredients in addition to the gas as a propellant. If such components are corrosive in category 8, 61 item toxicity or item 51. In the case of oxidation, the entire aerosol itself may have a secondary hazard of corresponding hazards.
2. Introduction to pressure vessels
Due to the pressure vessel containing a certain pressure, a slight carelessness in industrial production, transportation, use and other links can cause safety accidents. Therefore, China classifies pressure vessels into special equipment, and implements regulatory requirements such as periodic inspection for its design, production, manufacturing and use.
Figure 3 Notice of the release of the latest version of the "Special Equipment Catalog".
"Special Equipment Catalog".(Announcement No. 114 of 2014 of the former General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) has made a clear statement on the special equipment under the jurisdiction of the Special Equipment Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, including ".Pressure vessels
Fig.4. Classification of pressure vessels
As shown in Figure 4, pressure vessels mainly include 4 categories, among which the most relevant to aerosols is the gas cylinder, but the gas cylinder here has clear requirements for pressure and volume, and the gauge pressure should be 02MPa, volume and pressure product 10mpa.l。
3. Whether the aerosol belongs to the pressure vessel
gb 19521.13-2004 "Safety Code for Inspection of Small Gas Containers for Dangerous Goods" classifies aerosols as "small gas containers" and stipulates their internal pressure and volume.
Fig.5 Definition of small gas container
According to the definition shown in Figure 5, although the operating pressure of the aerosol may exceed 02MPa, but due to the small size, the product of pressure and volume does not reach 10mpa.l requirements, therefore, aerosols can be judged according to this standardIt is not a pressure vessel
In addition, Article 6 of the United Nations TDG RegulationsChapter 2 also clarifies that the performance inspection requirements for pressure vessels do not apply to aerosols, and therefore, aerosols are also included in the International Dangerous Goods RegulationsIt is not a pressure vessel
