This year marks the 20th anniversary of Grand Seiko's launch of the 9R calibre, which uses revolutionary Spring Drive technology to combine mainspring energy with electronic watchmaking to achieve a level of precision that surpasses that of traditional mechanical watches. Today, all Spring Drive watches are equipped with the 9R calibre. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9R calibre, the brand has launched a new GMT watch (Ref. SBGE305) in the collection.
The SBGE 305 is not a "new" watch, on the contrary, it shares the same technical specifications and design features as the other models in the SPORT range, in particular the SBGE 253, SBGE 255 and SBGE 257.
*Diameter of the watch 405 mm, thickness 147 mm. The case is made of stainless steel, brushed and Zaratsu ultra-mirror polished, with an internal anti-glare coating sapphire crystal and a solid caseback, making it water-resistant to 200 meters. The fixed black ceramic bezel is marked with 24-hour markers, while the screw-down crown is marked with the logo at 4 o'clock.
The deep red dial is particularly eye-catching, drawing inspiration from nature and reminiscent of "the view of the sunrise shining on the steep slopes of the Hotaka Mountains". The appliquéd indexes are delicately textured on top, with polished edges and luminescent stripes at 12 o'clock, while the rest are more elongated. At 4 o'clock, there is a date window with a white date dial with black numerals.
The intricate design of the hour and minute hands complements the appliquéd indexes and the inlays of lumibrite fluorescent to ensure readability in low light. **The second hand is fully polished and runs smoothly. The GMT hand tip has a fluorescent arrow pointing to the outer edge of the dial and the 24-hour scale on the ceramic bezel. At 9 o'clock, the polished hands are combined with a white, grey and black printing arc to indicate the remaining power reserve.
At the heart of this timepiece is the 9R66 Spring Drive GMT calibre, which is self-winding, quartz-regulated and contains 30 jewels and offers a power reserve of up to 72 hours with an average daily error of just one second. The calibre 9R66 features the Voyager GMT function, which allows the local hour hand and date to be adjusted forward or backward in one-hour increments.
The new Sport Spring Drive GMT comes with a stainless steel bracelet with a push-button folding clasp. The watch will be available in June 2024 in a limited edition of 1,300 pieces, with a price tag of 6,600 euros, equivalent to about 51,200 yuan. (Photo: Xu Chaoyang, Home of Watches).
