When designing architecture in China, the question of "how to deal with the vast natural environment" is an important issue.

In the face of China's huge environment, it is difficult for low-rise buildings to establish an equal relationship with it. Both small homes and large buildings feel defensive, forced to detach themselves from their environment and enclose themselves, exuding an air of resignation. Standing alone in a huge environment, Chinese architecture exudes a sense of loneliness. This impression is given both in the city and away from the city. For this reason, the mundane task of creating a good relationship between architecture and its surroundings can be a tricky problem in China.

In China, how can the relationship between the environment and architecture be equalized? Is it possible to bring the environment and architecture as close as possible, to blur their boundaries, and to transform nature into something that is friendly to us humans? That's what this project is all about.

Located in the development zone of Rizhao City, Shandong Province, China, the building is a complex facility that includes exhibitions, a visitor center, shops, and more. The exhibition space is currently exhibiting chocolate and related themed artworks, and can freely change the content of the exhibition in the future.

The site of the building is located on the water surface of an artificial lake near the entrance to the development zone. People who come here will first walk through the building and then can go to the development area. The construction area is about 20,000 square meters.

The building stretches from one end of the lake to the other and is about 1 kilometer long, almost the same diameter as the lake. On the surface of the lake, the building gently touches the surface of the water, extending quietly with the lake in a new way.

The transparent plane of the lake is introduced into the interior of the building, and on this unwalkable surface of the water, as if a piece of ground extends smoothly from the surface of the water, it can be imagined as a new landmass.

The columns that sink into the water at the bottom, the ribbon roof that seems to float above the columns, and the boundary between the water and the ground that are introduced into the interior of the building are all considered together.

Equally spaced columns establish a new surface of water, and the resulting shore of this surface establishes a new ground. A new "outside" is born from the inside of the building.

A new nature has emerged inside the building that we can get close to.

There is glass embedded between the columns, and in some places the glass can be opened. In the right season, an open place can bring the wind into the building, allowing people to feel the touch of a light breeze.

The part of the glass that sinks into the water leaves a void where the lake water can flow into the room automatically.

This new nature, generated from the inside of the building, is like an earthscape where the internal environment infiltrates the external environment. Walking through it, you can see: some places are spacious land with exhibits, and some places the land is very narrow and surrounded by a wide water surface; There are also places with high roofs that allow for more light and surrounding scenery, while others have low roofs where the ceiling is reflected in the water, while the light from the lower places seems to creep in from the water and reflect off the ceiling.

Opening the glass in spring and autumn allows the rhythmic waves of water from the external lake to be transmitted to the interior of the building. In winter, the lake outside freezes, and the water under the ice is connected to the inside of the building through a gap in the glass underneath, and stays there waiting for spring to come.

The slender building resembles a wisp of wind blowing across the lake, with the same scale as the vast natural environment. The roof rises and falls gently, with some places hanging low, creating a sense of continuity with the lake and the hillside behind, and in some places opening up to the sky, allowing the interior of the building to blend in with the exterior environment.

In response to China's natural environment, we designed the building as a large but friendly environment, exploring a relationship between nature and man-made that has never been seen before. Originally isolated buildings have become closer to the natural environment, existing in a way that touches each other. We discover the natural environment inside the building and generate a new "outside" in the building, thus creating a friendly connection between the building and the surrounding nature. A new relationship between nature and man is also born. The aim of this project is to create that relationship.
