Recently, a news about the short-term teaching of college students has aroused social concern. Liu Ling, a third-year student at Sichuan University, participated in the StarC fulcrum's volunteer teaching group, and although she actually spent less than 20 hours in class, she received a certificate of 35 hours of volunteer service. This kind of "tourism-style volunteer teaching" raises questions about the nature of volunteer teaching activities: is it for public welfare purposes or commercial business?
It is undeniable that short-term teaching has its value. It can attract more young people to pay attention to and participate in public welfare, and bring fresh teaching concepts and knowledge to children in poor areas. However, when volunteer teaching becomes a "touristy" experience, and when the retention of children becomes a means to meet the needs of individual study abroad applications, the meaning of volunteer teaching is distorted.
We must be clear that volunteering is not a trip, and should not be used as a springboard for personal growth. Short-term volunteer teaching projects are often under the banner of "public welfare", but behind them are commercial operations. Some organizations turn volunteer teaching into a means of satisfying their commercial interests by providing paid volunteer teaching services. This practice not only goes against the original intention of volunteer teaching, but also harms children in poor areas who really need long-term volunteer teaching.
Public welfare requires sincere dedication and sustained efforts. Short-term, utilitarian volunteer teaching will not bring substantial help to the children, but may cause them more harm. Therefore, we call on more young people to pay attention to volunteer teaching activities, but they should abandon the utilitarian mentality when participating, and truly regard volunteer teaching as a social responsibility and public welfare. At the same time, social organizations should also strengthen the supervision and guidance of volunteer teaching activities to ensure that they truly serve children in poor areas and achieve fair and sustainable development of education.
In view of these problems, we cannot simply deny the positive role of commercial teaching, but work hard to regulate and guide. First of all, ** and related institutions should strengthen the supervision of volunteer teaching organizations, formulate stricter management regulations and evaluation mechanisms, and ensure the standardization and effectiveness of commercial volunteer teaching services. At the same time, encourage and support more public welfare volunteer education organizations and individuals to participate in volunteer teaching activities to reduce the impact of commercialization.
Secondly, we also need to guide the public to correctly understand the nature and significance of volunteer teaching activities. Teaching is not a simple economic transaction or the pursuit of personal honor, but a manifestation of social responsibility and public welfare. We should encourage more people to participate in volunteer teaching activities, not only for financial benefit or personal honor, but also out of real love for education and concern for children.
Finally, we also need to strengthen the training and education of volunteer teachers to improve their education and teaching ability and teacher ethics. Only teachers with professional quality and good teacher ethics can provide high-quality education services for children in poor areas and help them grow and become talents.
When "volunteer teaching" becomes a business, we must be wary of the negative effects of commercialization. Although commercial teaching has alleviated the problem of lack of educational resources in poor areas to a certain extent, if it is allowed to develop, it will damage the educational interests and educational equity of children in poor areas. Therefore, we need to strengthen the supervision and guidance of volunteer teaching activities to ensure that they truly become a public welfare undertaking that is beneficial to the growth of children. Only in this way can we ensure that every child has a fair and quality education opportunity and achieve sustainable education.
