TUNIS, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya Batili issued a statement on Feb. 17, calling on Libyan leaders to unite and resolve all politically controversial issues.
Batili said the current political impasse in Libya poses a major threat to national unity. He said that all Libyans want to rebuild the social fabric and economy as soon as possible and restore the sovereignty and dignity of the country. He called on Libyan leaders to work together to build a united nation.
On February 17, 2011, anti-Gaddafi regime was overthrown in Libya and Libya has been in turmoil ever since. The United Nations-recognized National Unity** and the armed forces that support it control parts of the west, while the National Congress has formed an alliance with the "National Army" to form a separatist confrontation with National Unity** in Libya. The parties to the conflict in Libya signed a ceasefire agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, in October 2020, brokered by the United Nations, and agreed on a "road map to elections" during a political dialogue in Tunis in November of that year. But since then, due to various factors, the Libyan parliament and ** elections have been postponed indefinitely.
