Modern Chinese painting has undergone great social changes, transcending the old habits of literati painting for thousands of years, fusing Western methods, and creating a new pattern of modern Chinese art. In this magnificent history, maritime painting has become an unavoidable topic, firstly because it has occupied the top scenery of modern Chinese painting for a long time, but also because it has guided the direction of the development of modern Chinese painting.

The brilliance of maritime painting is inseparable from the promotion of several generations of leaders and figures. Among them, the leaders or those who had the greatest influence on modern Chinese painting were Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo, the former of whom set off a comprehensive revival of traditional figure painting in modern times after 700 years of decline due to the prosperity of literati painting in the Song and Yuan dynasties, and laid a solid foundation for the prosperity of modern figure painting; The latter opened up the glory of Jinshi freehand color ink painting for nearly a hundred years, and its influence has spread overseas, and the aftermath is still heard today.

Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo, the two generations of "Shanghai School" leaders, are not only teachers and students, but also close friends, and bosom friends. The friendship between the two generations of masters is just like the mountains and rivers, which not only involves Gao Yongzhi, Wang Yiting and other teachers and friends of the same generation, but also leads Xu Beihong, Chen Shizeng, Qi Baishi, Pan Tianshou, Liu Haisu, Cheng Shifa and other outstanding posterity, which not only creates the elegance of the sea ink forest, but also writes a new chapter in modern Chinese painting.

It is reported that this exhibition is sponsored by the Pudong New Area Cultural Relics Protection Management Institute and Shanghai Wu Changshuo Memorial Hall, guided by the Pudong New Area Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, and undertaken by Shanghai Pudong Culture Media.
