Former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has just announced his retirement! He shared the news on Instagram, reflecting on his career and thanking everyone who supported him.
The 36-year-old, who joined United from Everton in 2013, has made 177 appearances, scored 22 goals and also won four trophies: the Community Shield, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.
Marouane Fellaini began his football career at Standard Liege in Belgium before leaving Old Trafford in February 2019 to join Shandong Taishan in the Chinese Super League, his last club before retiring.
For the national team, Fellaini made 87 appearances for Belgium, scoring 18 goals and also represented Belgium at the Olympic Games (2008), the World Cup (2014 and 2018) and the European Championship (2016).
In his Instagram statement, he proudly mentioned his involvement in these important competitions. The statement began: "I would like to announce that I have decided to retire after 18 years of professional football. ”
But in fact, my football career started 18 years ago. I remember training with my dad as a kid and the first time I represented Standard Liege and the Belgian national team. Time flies! ”
It's been an incredible journey! I'm grateful to be able to play the sport I love at the highest level. I'm proud of the standard Liège team representing Belgium, Everton and Manchester United in England, and Shandong Taishan in China. It was an honour to represent the Belgian national team at the 2008 Olympics, Euro 2016 and the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. ”
I've played in front of some of the best fans in the world and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for always supporting me so strongly. Your encouragement and enthusiasm have always been my driving force. ”
All of this would not have been possible without my family, teammates, coaches, agents, and those who have been with me throughout my journey. Your love, guidance, support, and friendship are priceless. Thank you! ”
As I start a new chapter in my life, I look forward to new challenges, but rest assured, no matter what, I will continue to support beautiful football in every way. ”
We'll see you again soon! ❤️
