At the beginning of the new year, I received a bad news: my old classmate Xiao Youxiang died suddenly on New Year's Day! In addition to being shocked, I couldn't help but turn out his autobiographical memoir ---Sixtieth Mileage", and his voice and smile were resurrected in history!
Lao Xiao was a classmate of my classmates at Huazhong Institute of Technology (now Huazhong University of Science and Technology). He was an outstanding pioneer and builder of railway wireless communication in China's early days.
Although they are in the same school, department, and grade, they are not in the same class, so they are not familiar with each other during the school period; Although the graduation assignment was also in Yunnan, which is also on the border, he didn't know about each other at first, he went to Kunming, and I went to an ethnic minority autonomous prefecture. (For well-known historical reasons, he left school a month or two later than we did). The strange thing is that less than half a year after graduation, we actually met unexpectedly in Chuxiong! This was the first classmate I saw since I left school! For a person who is alone and in a barren land, the joy can be imagined! He also specifically recorded this incident in his memoirs. Later, we were transferred back to Wuhan one after another, and we were both busy with work and had no contact. It wasn't until I retired that I found out that we used to live in the same area--- Xudong! Since then, they have been happily accompanied and inseparable: in the summer, we go to East Lake to swim together, usually go for a walk in the Sand Lake Park at the door of our home, catch up, chat, exchange experiences, and occasionally have dinner and drink together, and have a good time!
Lao Xiao, as his daughter said in "Obituary": "He is a cheerful and enthusiastic, kind and simple person, with a wide range of interests and hobbies, and a humorous and interesting person." He often infects the people around him with his style, bringing a relaxed and happy atmosphere. "Lao Xiao is very hospitable, and many classmates often contact him frequently!
"Sixtieth mileage" is a masterpiece created by Lao Xiao in his later years, written in May 2009, made a complete review and detailed description of his life, real and concrete, vivid and delicate, deep thoughts, literary brilliance, can be said to be a microcosm of his era, giving people a lot of inspiration and reference, it is indeed worth reading! This is also a precious spiritual wealth he left to this world!
Lao Xiao is gone, may his spirit live on!
I would like to express my deep sorrow with this article!
The following is an overview and some excerpts from "Sixtieth Mileage":
Self-ordering. I really want to write an autobiographical book for myself, recalling the footprints left by my life in the sixtieth year, hoping to find something with a sense of accomplishment, so that I can have a sense of satisfaction and a good mood in my life.
In retrospect, the ordinary career as a grass farmer is not lackluster on the surface: the above famous school is a turning point, bringing the whole family out of the farm; marrying a classmate in Shanghai as a wife makes relatives cross regions; The work has been extended to Europe and the United States, leaving footprints abroad. In his career, he has participated in the design of large-scale engineering projects, and has also sparked innovation from time to time; After experiencing various technical positions, he wore the hat of an engineer to "Zhenggao".
In the family, the husband and wife are harmonious, the brothers and sisters are harmonious, the daughters are mature, and the grandchildren are healthy and lovely; Deeply affected by the grace of his parents, the heart of filial piety lasts forever, feeds his parents for several years, and completes the retirement of the elderly.
Life is good. Some people say that the road of life is destined, and I believe this. Maybe it's the virtue I accumulated in my previous life, and the god of fate arranged my life so carefully.
Of course, the road of life is also full of waves and setbacks, but they are all in line with the philosophy of "reincarnation of cause and effect" and "balance between gains and losses", and the trajectory of life is still rising in waves. "Heaven and earth have righteousness, and miscellaneous manifolds." I like this timeless quote from Wen Tianxiang. God is fair to everyone, as long as you grasp it well, everyone will have a wonderful life. So I wrote it on a flat forehead and hung it on the wall of my room to thank my parents and God. Xiao Youxiang.

I started in 1984 and my leadership assigned me to specialize in wireless communications. Previously, I already had a few years of wired communication design experience, and then came back to engage in wireless communication handy, because the railway wireless communication is a chain structure that combines wireless and wireless, and my task is to configure wireless train dispatching for the Heng (Yang) Guangzhou (Zhou) line electrification transformation project, and the project lasted for 4 years. The difficulty of this project is in 14Wireless communication is achieved in the 3-kilometer Dayao Mountain Tunnel. From my entry into the field of wireless communication to 1984 has gone through 10 years of history, railway wireless communication in that "strict management, less use" era, the development is very slow, although the Academy of Railway Sciences, Beijing Communication and Signal Company respectively developed several systems, but are still in the stage of improvement. Immediately after I took over, I studied the advantages and disadvantages of several systems, combined with the topography of the Hengguang line, and decided to cooperate with the Academy of Railway Sciences. In the process of cooperation, we have visited the railway construction site many times to survey and test, and Professor Tian Cuiyun of Northern Jiaotong University also carried out scientific research projects on this railway with the world's 10th largest tunnel at that time. In the process of international bidding for equipment hosted by the Ministry of Railways, the host hoped that the Hengguang Line and the Shi (Jiazhuang) Tai (Yuan) Line and the Zheng (Zhou) West (An) Line would adopt the same system (the system developed by the General Signal Institute) for bidding. From the end of '85 to the end of '86, I basically lived in Beijing for a long time, negotiating with companies from various countries bidding internationally, and I was the main technical negotiator.
In 1985, I studied Japanese at Ganghan University for one year and obtained a certificate of completion. Because it was a yen loan, the main bidders were Mitsubishi of Japan, NEC, Kokusai Electric, Toko & Co., Sino and ELN of Austria. In May 1986, I was selected as a member of the "seed team" (equivalent to the expert group) of wireless communication of the Ministry of Railways and participated in various technical meetings organized by the Ministry of Railways.
The Ministry of Railways has paid attention to the fact that railway wireless communication can prevent accidents during train operation and provide guarantee for ensuring the safety of trains. At the end of the year, after signing the order contract with the Japanese company, the leader transferred me to the Yingxia Line electrification project to be responsible for wireless communication, and the work was handed over. The implementation of the project was carried out according to the plan I designed, and it was successfully opened in 1987 and became a model project for a time. The scientific research project of Beijing Jiaotong University was awarded the third prize of scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Railways in 90, and I also won the "National Science and Technology Project Completion Certificate".
In early 1984, Qinxiu got married. After the house in Jiangbian Bridge Village was built, we moved to a new house soon after, and my parents and Xiao Dan also passed. This house was built in my name by the master surnamed Zhu when Qinxiu was working on the street. In this way, our family will be stabilized and will have room to maneuver. At this time, Qingchuan and Jichuan were also in elementary school, which was a good time for us to do business. In '85, when we both went on a business trip to Beijing, we brought my father and Ji Chuan with us, and they had a great time, but my mother unfortunately never took her on a trip because of motion sickness.
At the end of 1986, when I took over the Yingxia Line, I worked for three years. These three years were three years of innovation for me, but in the end, nothing happened. In the design activities of the Hengguang Line, because I came into contact with the world's cutting-edge technology at that time, according to the complex terrain of the Yingxia Line along the water system in the mountainous area, I proposed to solve the problem of wireless transmission in the mountainous area by using the British subway and mine wireless communication mode and combining the latest Japanese technology, which can not only have better transmission quality than the Hengguang Line, but also reduce the cost. This plan was supported by the relevant departments of the Ministry of Railways, but the hospital did not agree. They think that we are engaged in engineering design, not scientific research, and that it is too risky. The plan was put on hold for half a year, and it was not until the ministry asked me to report to the director of the division that I was forced to let go. This plan was considered feasible by Professor Kang Shidi of Northern Jiaotong University (the wireless authority of the ministry), and came to the institute to explain and publicize it theoretically, and the Academy of Railway Sciences also took the initiative to ask for cooperation with us. At the beginning of 1988, the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Railways listed the 1988 science and technology project as "Research on the Wireless Transmission Mode of Small Gain and Low Cost in Mountain Tunnels", and the whole road was tendered, and the result was won by our institute. I am the first person in charge of the project, and Qian Duming of the Academy of Sciences (we are good friends) is the second person in charge. The review of design documents was held in Xiamen in May 1988, with the participation of the General Administration of Infrastructure, the Electric Power Bureau, the Science and Technology Department, the Appraisal Center, the Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Railway Bureau and other units. The meeting unanimously approved the design plan I read out and decided to implement it in sections of the Yingxia Line. This project is a loan from the World Bank, and I was the leader of the bid evaluation team when the equipment was tendered internationally in early 1989. There are Japan, West Germany, Austria and other countries to bid for a number of manufacturers, the bid evaluation and technical negotiations are in full swing, Shanghai Railway Bureau suddenly changed its mind, to the Yingxia line by the Xi'an Research Institute just developed a simple wireless system, of course, there are many human factors, will our bid evaluation team aside, we have only to go home. In any case, my plan was technically feasible and widely recognized by the wireless community, and at that time it had a great impact on the Ministry of Railways and the wireless communication industry (including many manufacturers are also studying trial products). During that half-year period, Ji Ping and I quarreled with the then director, mainly because of his conservatism and arbitrariness, but also because of his anger. Because of the wireless engineering of Hengguang Line, there is no place for me to go abroad to Japan, the reason is because I am young and there is still a chance.
In 1987, we moved to a two-bedroom, one-living room unit with separate kitchen and bathroom, which was an improvement over the previous one, and my parents were living with us. On February 28, 1988, the twelfth day of the first lunar month, my father died of cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 63 (born on April 24, 1925). Children and grandchildren are around their knees, and they are satisfied. Due to leaving the land, the body was blessed, and he suffered from high blood pressure and cataracts, and gradually lost the joy of life, and finally died a good death and was buried in Shimenfeng Cemetery.
In May 1989, after my Yingxia Line work was over, I immediately went to Hangzhou on a business trip instead of Ji Ping, she was doing Hangzhou hub design at that time, and the work was very busy, I went to deal with the telecommunications, broadcasting, and power line relocation caused by the new railway, and lived in Xiaoshan. In his spare time, he visited Lu Xun's hometown in Shaoxing and ate spiced beans at Xianheng Hotel. At that time, I drank rice wine every day, and I knew that Shaoxing rice wine was worthy of its name. Add ginger shreds, plum hot and hot, the taste is excellent, 8 two stomachs, enough to let you sleep for half a day without waking up, since then I have changed to drink rice wine every time I go to Shanghai.
Qingchuan graduated from junior high school in September of this year, and in order to cultivate her self-reliance and hometown feelings, I contacted her to go to Tianmen Middle School to attend high school, and asked my old classmates to take care of her. When I went back to my alma mater for the 80th anniversary, she was the moderator. Eating and living with rural children for three years has undoubtedly had a profound impact on her growth.
At the end of 1989, I took over the communication design project of the electrification reconstruction project from Zhuzhou to Huaihua of the Xiangqian Line. This should be considered a long trunk line, with a total length of 440 kilometers and 57 stations. There are 8 large and small communication stations. In the transmission design scheme, there were relatively advanced digital microwaves in the sky at that time, integrated optical cables and wireless communications that had just been promoted underground, and advanced and backward equipment coexisted. This was undoubtedly a trust and challenge to my ability to take full control, and I worked hard to complete the initial design in August 1990.
In January 1991, Ji Ping attended the design document review meeting held by the Ministry of Railways in Huaihua, Hunan Province, and the communication professional documents I was responsible for were successfully approved. Due to the full-line digital microwave communication, involving geology, housing construction, electric power and other majors, the institute set up a microwave overall design team, with me as the overall design leader, and as the deputy general manager of the Xiangqian line, and concurrently the person in charge of the communication major. At the beginning of March, after my wound first healed, I led more than 10 members of the overall team to conduct a one-month microwave station site selection and measurement, and 9 of the 15 microwave stations on the whole line were in the mountains. I actually climbed to the top of the 800-meter-high snow-capped peak, and was tested for my vitality, and of course, I walked down on the shoulders of the young man on the way down.
From then until the end of '92, I was responsible for and completed the design of all stages of the Hunan-Guizhou line, constantly enriching and improving myself, which was the fastest growing period in my career.
In September 1992, Qingchuan graduated from high school in Tianmen Middle School, and his results in the college entrance examination were not satisfactory, so I contacted my "comrades-in-arms" and teachers Zhang Taihang and Zhu Yaoting, who became the dean of literature and vice president respectively, and asked them to help admit Qingchuan to Huazhong University of Science and Technology to study refrigeration. At this time, Ji Chuan was also in junior high school at Tiesiyuan Middle School.
