22%-30% of blind children in China are related to congenital cataracts, accounting for the second cause of blindness. Every year during the winter and summer vacations, the Cataract and Presbyopia Center of Xiamen Eye Center performs surgeries on many children with congenital cataracts.
Why do children get cataracts?
01 - Heredity
Including family inheritance, chromosomal abnormalities, gene mutations, etc., especially if parents or relatives have congenital cataracts, children may be sick, so people with a family history should pay special attention.
02- Non-genetic
During pregnancy, the mother is infected with viruses, metabolic abnormalities, exposure to radiation, poisoning and other factors, resulting in the child's lens not developing normally. In particular, in the first 3 months of pregnancy, it may be associated with viral infections or medications (e.g. steroids) in the mother, as well as calcium deficiency, vitamin deficiency, parathyroid insufficiency, and malnutrition during pregnancy.

Cataracts can occur in children, whether it is penetrating eye injury, impact injury, or exposure to ionizing radiation and high-voltage electric shock.

Surgery is the only way to restore vision and reduce the occurrence of vision retardation or retardation. The timing of surgery depends on the disease.
If the impact on vision is not large, such as common coronary and punctate cataracts, surgery is generally not required, and this kind of lens opacity usually does not develop for a long time, and only regular follow-up observation is required; However, for children with significant visual impairment, surgery is needed as soon as possible.
