Recently, due to slippery roads, we have admitted a significant increase in patients with fractures and trauma. On February 25, Sheng Bin, director of the Seventh Ward of the Department of Orthopedics of the Yuelu Mountain Branch of the Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, said in an interview that in low temperature weather, citizens and friends must avoid slippery areas when walking outside, and beware of falling and fractures.

The reporter learned that on February 22, for example, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the seventh ward of the orthopedic department of the Yuelu Mountain Branch of the hospital received 12 patients with fractures caused by slips and falls, mainly in their 50s and 80s.

Middle-aged and older people often have osteoporosis and a higher risk of fractures from falls. Sheng Bin introduced that among the fractures caused by slips and falls, distal radius fractures, spinal compression fractures, and femoral neck fractures are the most common, among which patients with distal radius fractures (wrist fractures) account for the highest proportion.

So how can we prevent falls while walking? In this regard, Sheng Bin gave professional advice.

First, you can start with "equipment". "Everyone should prepare warm clothing and non-slip shoes in advance. When traveling in snow and ice, wear gloves and warm clothes. Sheng Bin reminded that the pants should not be too long, so as not to step on the trouser hem and fall; Socks should fit well, and do not wear socks with slippery feet; The laces should be fastened tightly and the laces should not be too long to avoid falling when stepping on the laces; Pick the right non-slip shoes.

Secondly, be down-to-earth and go out early and slowly. Every step of walking in ice and snow must be stepped on, one step at a time, and "down-to-earth" walking will not slip. "Especially when you hit uneven roads, you have to slow down. It's best to reserve more time for travel on ice and snow days, go out early and walk slowly. He said.

At the same time, it is recommended that everyone learn to walk with a penguin - low center of gravity, outside the figure eight, walking in broken steps, arms extended, swaying and swinging to maintain balance.

So, what if you accidentally fall? Sheng Bin believes that if you accidentally fall, remember to be calm after falling.

First of all, check how your limbs are and don't rush to get up. If your hands and feet are fine, you can turn sideways first, turn in a direction that you find convenient and comfortable, bend your legs and flip your body in a prone position, so that your knees and elbows are on the ground, and use their strength to support your whole body.

In this process, if there is a relatively stable object around you, you can stand up with the help of it. Sheng Bin reminded that if you find that a part of your body is very painful after falling, you must not forcibly support it; Exercise gradually, observe whether symptoms worsen, rule out emergencies such as fractures and open injuries, and seek assistance and seek medical attention at the nearest hospital.
