Ding Wenchang was born in Suzhou, Anhui Province in 1933. In his formative years, he witnessed the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, and also witnessed the great process of our party leading the people of all ethnic groups across the country to establish New China.
In this environment, Ding Wenchang has had the dream of being a soldier since he was a child. In 1951, at the age of 18, he joined the army and entered the 16th Infantry School of the People's Liberation Army.
At this time, the Air Force of New China had just been established, and in order to strengthen the building of the Air Force, Liu Yalou, then commander of the Air Force, repeatedly selected outstanding personnel from the army system and high-level intellectuals to inject new strength into the building of the Air Force of New China.
Ding Wenchang thus became one of them and devoted himself to the cause of the Air Force.
Ding Wenchang was engaged in the Air Force Ground Support Machinery major, and after graduation, he was assigned to the Air Force Ground Support Force as a mechanic. Later, he was selected by the organization to work in the political department of the Air Force, and during this period he entered the 5th Preparatory Corps of the Air Force and the 10th Aviation School.
After years of hard work and study, Ding Wenchang was promoted quickly, and in 1981, he was promoted to the head of the cadre department of the Air Force Political Department of the Shenyang Military Region, when he was only 48 years old.
In 1985, Ding Wenchang joined the Political Department of the Air Force and served as deputy director. Two years later, in 1988, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) implemented a new military rank system, and Ding Wenchang, who was 55 years old at the time, was awarded the rank of major general and became a major general in the Air Force.
In the same year, Ding Wenchang was promoted to director of the Political Department of the Air Force. During his two-year tenure as director of the Air Force's Political Department, in 1990, the 57-year-old Ding Wenchang was awarded the rank of lieutenant general and became a lieutenant general in the Air Force.
In 1992, Ding Wenchang succeeded Zhu Guang and became the 9th political commissar of the Air Force. In 1996, at the age of 63, he was awarded the rank of general and became an air force general. Ding Wenchang served as political commissar of the Air Force for seven years, during which time he worked with three air force commanders, General Cao Shuangming, General Yu Zhenwu and General Liu Shunyao.
He is good at political work, cooperates harmoniously with the commanders of the Air Force, and makes outstanding contributions to promoting the modernization and regularization of the Air Force, and is an important contributor to the development and growth of the Air Force.
In 1998, when the Yangtze River suffered a rare flood, Ding Wenchang, as the political commissar of the Air Force, went to the front line to direct the flood relief despite the age of 65, led the air force units to devote themselves to the rescue operation, composed a moving song of flood fighting, and made great contributions to the victory over the flood.
In 1999, at the age of 66, General Ding Wenchang retired with honor, ending his mission as political commissar of the Air Force. Now 88 years old, General Ding Wenchang is in good health, and his life in his later years is calm and serene.
It is worth mentioning that after General Ding Wenchang retired, General Qiao Qingchen took over his baton and became the tenth political commissar of the Air Force. General Qiao Qingchen was also an Air Force general, and later served as the commander of the Air Force.
