Editor's note: In recent years, with the continuous opening up of China, more and more foreign friends have come to study in China and work in Henan. What does China look like in their eyes? Henan International Communication Center and Dahe.com jointly launched the Global Talk column, focusing on foreign friends who study, work and live in Henan, and through their eyes and words, they can show the development and changes of Henan in an all-round, multi-angle and three-dimensional way, and tell Chinese stories well with Henan's practice. The 4th issue is launched today: "Malaysian Student Lim Su Hui: I Want to Bring Traditional Chinese Medicine Back to My Hometown".

"Nowadays, the scope of acupuncture is becoming more and more extensive, such as internal medicine, cervical spondylosis, sprains, low back pain, chronic diseases, hypertension and ......Speaking of the efficacy of acupuncture, Lin Suhui told reporters. From Malaysia, which is hot and humid all year round, to the hinterland of the Central Plains with four distinct seasons, in 2022, Lin Suhui successfully got an offer from Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and became a master's student majoring in acupuncture and massage at the school.

The story of Lin Suhui and Chinese medicine begins with her fluent Chinese, she said: "My grandfather and grandmother are both from Teochew. For as long as I can remember, my grandfather only spoke Teochew, and when I grew up, I realized that my grandfather actually spoke Malay, but he only pretended to speak Teochew in front of us. ”

The river is 3,000 miles, and the family letter is fifteen lines. The strong longing for his homeland kept his grandfather's native accent unchanged when he went to Malaysia, and he "deliberately" created a unique dialect environment for his children, grandchildren, and children. "When it came to our generation, my grandfather would send us all to study in Chinese elementary school and receive Chinese language teaching. Thanks to this, Lin Suhui's Chinese gradually reached the level of her mother tongue, which also prompted her to turn her attention to traditional Chinese medicine. In the Ipoh area of Perak, Malaysia, Chinese medicine halls can be found everywhere, and the acceptance of Chinese medicine by the local youth group is also increasing, and in this way, Chinese medicine has entered Lim Su Hui's field of vision and become her university major. "Most of the university classes in Malaysia use English and Malay, and only the classes in the Chinese Department and the Department of Chinese Medicine use Chinese, but my Chinese is relatively good, so it is natural to apply for the Chinese Medicine major. ”

Lin Suhui was interviewed by reporters.

As an undergraduate, Lin Suhui went to a school in Wuhan as an exchange student, and before that, China had always been her "second home" that she had never met. Her understanding of traditional Chinese culture is only better than that of her grandfather and grandmother. "Tomb sweeping on the Qingming Festival, moon worship on the Mid-Autumn Festival, making zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival and reunion dinner at night on Chinese New Year's Eve ......In Lin Suhui's family, most of the traditional Chinese culture and customs are well preserved, and behind the "sense of ceremony" is also full of their strong nostalgia for China.

Grandpa and grandmother who came to Malaysia worked hard and sent the money they earned to their great-grandmother to donate to their hometown to build roads and houses. Lin Suhui told reporters that in the hearts of grandpa and grandmother, hometown Chaozhou has always occupied an irreplaceable place.

When he left home and returned to his eldest child, his hometown accent has not changed, and his sideburns have declined. "The elders have returned to China several times, and the connection with their hometown has never been interrupted. From leaving their homeland to revisiting their homeland, what emerged in their hearts was not only the warmth brought by their homeland, but also the admiration for the beautiful life and extraordinary changes in front of them. It is precisely because they have seen and experienced the achievements of Chinese-style modernization and high-quality development that they have supported the idea of their granddaughter Lin Suhui to study in China.

Most of my university teachers are from China, and even the textbooks are published in China. "The mature teaching methods and rich clinical experience of Chinese teachers have had a great impact on Lin Suhui, which is another important reason for her to study in China. "I admire that Chinese teachers can recite some chapters of the Yellow Emperor's Neijing word for word! As a result, the idea of coming to China to study Chinese medicine gradually took root in Lin Suhui's heart. In 2023, the first year of the post-epidemic era, Lin Suhui came to Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine as she wished, and started her master's degree in the true sense. Barrier-free communication, enthusiastic teachers and classmates, and a clean and comfortable living environment made her quickly adapt to her new life in Henan.

In addition to her busy studies, Lin Suhui also likes City Walk. In the nearly a year she has lived in Henan, she has been to many places. "I have been to Luoyang, Nanyang, Xuchang, Jiaozuo and other places, which also gives me a real sense of Chinese medicine culture. Shaolin Pharmacy, Taijiquan, 'Huaxia Medicine Capital' Yuzhou, Nanyang Medical Shrine and 'Four Great Medicines' (Huai Yam, Huai Dihuang, Huai Ox Knee, Huai Chrysanthemum) ......Henan is one of the important birthplaces of traditional Chinese medicine. Lin Suhui told reporters that there is an ancient tree in the medical shrine, although it has withered and old, but the branches facing the medical saint Zhang Zhongjing are still sprouting green leaves, which impressed her, "Perhaps this represents the culture of traditional Chinese medicine, although it has gone through thousands of years, it still exudes vitality."

Traditional Chinese medicine is a treasure of ancient Chinese science and the key to unlocking the treasure house of Chinese civilization. It is understood that Henan is the hometown of Zhang Zhongjing, a major province of traditional Chinese medicine and a medical saint, with rich traditional Chinese medicine resources, profound history and culture, and the number and output of traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine medical institutions, practitioners, and education scale are among the top in the country. According to the incomplete statistics of the fourth survey of traditional Chinese medicine resources (pilot) in Henan Province, there are more than 3,000 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine resources in specimens, survey data and medicinal evidence, 236 kinds of species with reserves, more than 100 kinds of cultivated species, and nearly 40 kinds of species above designated size.

The rich cultural life also made Lin Suhui feel the modern charm of ancient Henan. "I later found out that the time it took me to travel by high-speed train from Zhengzhou to other cities in Henan was equivalent to a cross-state trip in Malaysia. Henan's convenient high-speed rail network makes 'day trips' a reality. ”

The abundance of shared bicycles and convenient urban rail transit in Zhengzhou has also boosted Lin Suhui's happiness in Henan, she said: "I usually ride shared bicycles or take the subway when I travel, and not long ago I took the subway to 'check in' the Zhengzhou Petrochemical Plant Creative Park." ”

In Henan, Lin Suhui uses her footprints to light up the map of life, and at the same time, she is also deepening her understanding of China. "From food, study, communication to daily life, I can feel the profound Chinese culture. From babbling to receiving professional education, Lin Suhui gradually understood and integrated into Chinese culture through studying abroad.

Lin Suhui is only in Henan Drama Fantasy City.

During her studies at Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Lin Suhui's horizons continued to broaden. "The special moxibustion box made by my supervisor, Professor Gao Xiyan, can not only give full play to the curative effect of moxibustion, but also effectively reduce environmental pollution. Another patented meridian measuring instrument uses a thermal pen to measure the sensitivity of acupuncture points for patients, and can effectively analyze the patient's condition through data comparison. Lin Suhui told reporters that she had a vague concept of the 12 meridians when she was studying acupuncture, but now the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and science and technology provides accurate data support. "In the future, these products and technologies can be introduced into Malaysia, so that the Malaysian people can also benefit from the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese medicine. In Henan, the learning and application of TCM knowledge not only gave Lim Suhui a sense of accomplishment, but also made her see the potential of cooperation between Malaysia and China in the field of TCM.

Talking about the biggest challenge of studying here, Lin Suhui said with a smile: "Some traditional Chinese medicine knowledge is difficult to understand, and what impresses me is some of the terms of tuina, such as holding, kneading, wrenching, etc., as well as ancient medical books such as "The Yellow Emperor's Neijing" and "Treatise on Typhoid Fever and Miscellaneous Diseases". The level of Chinese medicine in China is very high, and the students in Henan are also very 'rolly', so I will study harder in the future, and I will choose to continue my studies in Henan if I have the opportunity.
