On January 29, 2024, the unveiling ceremony of the Macao Node of the "International Epidemiological Model Cooperation Network" initiated by Macau University of Science and Technology, Guangzhou Medical University and INESC-ID, a well-known Portuguese scientific research institution, was held at the Kangze Innovation and Technology Center of Macau University of Science and Technology.
Unveiling ceremony. Zhong Nanshan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Director of the Guangzhou Laboratory, Distinguished Professor of Macau University of Science and Technology, Arlindo Oliveira, President of the Portuguese Institute of Computer Systems Engineering (IINSC) and Distinguished Professor of Macau University of Science and Technology, Ana Teresa Freitas, Head of the Portuguese Node of the European Union Life Science Research Infrastructure (ELIXIR) Platform and INESC Professor, Professor Yang Zifeng, Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases of Guangzhou Medical University, and Chair Professor Jiang Zhihong, Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology, presided over the unveiling ceremony on behalf of Han Zitian, Director of the "Laboratory for Large-scale Respiratory Disease Epidemiology and Medical Big Data Artificial Intelligence Application" (hereinafter referred to as the "Early Warning Laboratory") of the School of Innovation and Engineering.
At the exchange meeting, Academician Zhong Nanshan congratulated the establishment of the learning platform, and spoke highly of a series of work achievements made by M.U.S.T. and Guangzhou Medical University in recent years in the early warning research of the new crown epidemic, and said that the establishment of the Sino-Portuguese Federal Learning Platform can not only continuously form technological breakthroughs and theoretical innovations through the use of overseas data, mathematical models and intelligent system models, but also support the disease control department to better guide prevention and control.
President of the Portuguese Institute of Computer Systems Engineering (INESC) ProfArlindo Oliveira and Ana Teresa Freitas, Head of the EU's Elixir Portugal Node, put forward the Portuguese side's ideas and ideas on the establishment of an early warning data and model governance system for large-scale infectious diseases with Sino-Portuguese characteristics, which is currently being promoted by the three parties of the cooperation network, with Macao as the link.
International Collaborative Network for Epidemiological Modeling.
Professor Yang Zifeng, Co-Director of the Early Warning Laboratory, and Director Han Zitian introduced and reported on the recent progress and future work prospects of the "International Epidemiological Model Cooperation Network" initiated by the three parties, and planned to focus on continuous scientific research in three aspects: "International Biomedical Data Governance System", "Sino-Portuguese Biomedical Joint Learning Platform" and "Cross-border Large-scale Infectious Disease ** Early Warning Model Cooperation". The two directors pointed out that life science data is highly sensitive, and international cooperation in the future, especially in data and models, is very important, and the establishment of the "federated learning" platform is a good attempt to achieve cross-border cooperation.
The construction of the federated learning platform aims to deepen the cooperation of international epidemic early warning, strengthen the research and application coordination of international epidemic models, and improve the ability of epidemic prevention and early warning on a global scale. The next step will be to attract more research institutions into the cooperation network and widely promote the co-construction and sharing of the international epidemic model.
