What is Flexible DC Transmission?
Voltage source converter based high voltage direct current transmission (VSC-HVDC) technology was proposed by Boon-Teck Ooi et al. of McGill University in Canada in 1990. A new transmission technology based on self-shut-off devices and pulse-width modulation (PWM) technology, which has the advantages of supplying power to passive networks, no commutation failures, no communication between converter stations, and easy formation of multi-terminal DC systems. As a new generation of DC transmission technology, flexible DC transmission is similar in structure to HVDC transmission, which is still composed of converter stations and DC transmission lines (usually DC cables).
The converter stations at both ends of the flexible DC transmission system are composed of flexible DC transmission, converter transformer equipment, converter reactance equipment, etc. The most critical core part of this is VSC, which is made up of a rectifier bridge and a DC capacitor. In the system, considering the topology of its main circuit and the type of switching device, the sinusoidal pulse width modulation technology can be used to compare the data of such technology with the modulated reference wave and the triangular carrier, and in the case of the relatively small data of the latter, the lower bridge arm switch will be triggered to turn on and turn off the lower bridge arm. This is mainly due to the fact that both the floating value and the phase can be intelligently mediated using pulse width modulation technology. Therefore, the amplitude and phase of the fundamental frequency component of the VSC AC current output voltage can also be adjusted by pulse width.
