18V 600W brushless DC motor inverter reference design

Mondo Technology Updated on 2024-02-02

This reference design demonstrates a 600W power stage to drive a three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor for wireless tools powered by a 5-cell lithium-ion battery with a voltage of up to 21V. The design is a compact 60mm x 60mm driver that provides 33arms of continuous current at a switching frequency of 20kHz without the need for a heat sink (utilizing natural convection), enabling sensor-based trapezoidal control. The design demonstrates the operation of the MOSFET in a safe operating area with enhanced protection features including MOSFET overcurrent and breakdown protection with VDS monitoring, and switching voltage spike optimization with slew rate control and overtemperature protection.
