Military sources said the Burmese army sentenced to death three brigadier generals, who led hundreds of soldiers to surrender last month and handed over a strategic town on the border to ethnic armed groups.

"Three brigadier generals, including the commander of the town of Laukkai, were sentenced to death," a Myanmar military source said on Monday (Feb 19), speaking on condition of anonymity. Another military source confirmed the verdict.

In early January, the "Three Brotherly Alliances," formed by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, the Arakan Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (NDA) in Shan State, issued a statement saying that after weeks of fierce fighting, the alliance had taken control of Lao Cai, a town in northern Myanmar's Shan State, and that the military's regional headquarters in Lao Cai had surrendered.

Lao Cai is the capital of the Kokang Autonomous Region in northern Shan State, Myanmar. It was captured by the Three Brothers Alliance, another victory for Myanmar's ethnic armed forces since its full-scale campaign in October 2023, and the surrender of the Lao Cai military was one of the biggest losses of the Myanmar army in decades.

After the surrender of the military, the officers and their units were allowed to leave the area. A military spokesman confirmed to AFP in January that three brigadier generals were in military custody.

Under Myanmar military law, desertion without permission is punishable by death. However, the source did not say when the military ** made the above death sentence, and the spokesman of the military ** could not be reached for comment.
