It is my supreme honor as a hydropower person to be able to integrate the best of my life into the great development of the country for more than 30 years. Zhang Chunsheng, chief scientist of China Power Construction Group, design project manager and technical director of Baihetan Hydropower Station, was recently awarded the title of "National Outstanding Engineer".
Zhang Chunsheng has been deeply engaged in hydropower design research and engineering practice for 38 years. He has presided over the design and construction of 22 large-scale hydropower projects, such as Baihetan Hydropower Station, Jinping II Hydropower Station, and Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station, and has overcome a series of mechanical and structural problems caused by ultra-large-scale, ultra-deep burial and ultra-high water pressure in hydropower underground projects, and has made important contributions to the progress of hydropower science and technology in China.
In the 90s of the last century, the pumped storage construction technology of western developed countries has gradually matured, but China has just started in this field. Zhang Chunsheng, who was 31 years old at the time, as the deputy design chief engineer of the project, fully participated in the design and major technical issues of Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station, the first batch and largest pumped storage power station in China.
There are many technical problems, and the most reasonable solutions can only be proposed by seeing them with their own eyes on the spot. The scene is the battlefield, and the soldier can never leave the battlefield. Zhang Chunsheng said with deep understanding.
Starting from Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station, Zhang Chunsheng has presided over and participated in the construction and research of more than 10 pumped storage projects. He led the design team to take root in the front line of the project, and broke through the unique problems of reservoir seepage prevention of pumped storage power stations, reservoir formation and dam construction technology under complex geological conditions, and high-pressure waterway design, helping China's pumped storage technology to achieve leapfrog development.
The Jinping Hydropower Project on the Yalong River is located deep in the mountains and has been included in the national key development plan since the 60s of the last century. However, due to a series of long-term insurmountable technical obstacles such as ultra-high geostress, strong rockburst, and high-pressure water inrush, the preliminary demonstration work of the project has been interrupted many times.
In 1998, Zhang Chunsheng began to fully preside over the research of key technologies of Jinping II Hydropower Station, and took up the historical task of realizing the dream of Jinping. "Since we took on the engineering work, we had to take responsibility for every step of the way. Zhang Chunsheng said.
In 2009, there was a sudden water gushing in the auxiliary cave of Jinping II Hydropower Station, and the water in the cave rose rapidly. In order to find out the danger as soon as possible, Zhang Chunsheng led several technicians, holding bamboo poles, ropes around their waists, searchlights above their heads, and water and dry food on their backs, groping their way forward in the waist-deep water of the tunnel. They investigated and discussed rescue measures, and stayed for a whole day. After unremitting efforts, he led the team to successfully achieve groundwater plugging and ensure the construction safety of the project.
As engineers, it's our job to come up with the best design solutions to solve the actual engineering problems on site, and we can't back down no matter how difficult it is. Zhang Chunsheng said. During the construction of Jinping II Hydropower Station, he led the design team to break through a series of major technical bottlenecks such as ultra-high geostress and strong rockburst, high-pressure and large-flow underground water inrush, and single-head ventilation in ultra-long tunnel construction. One technological breakthrough after another has laid a solid theoretical and practical foundation for the smooth construction of Jinping II Hydropower Station, and promoted China's deep-buried long tunnel construction technology to a new level.
As the world's second largest hydropower station, Baihetan Hydropower Station has a huge scale and complex geological conditions, creating a number of world's best, and is known as the "Mount Everest" of the world's hydropower industry.
Zhang Chunsheng, who served as the design project manager and technical director of the Baihetan Hydropower Station, has led technicians to climb high and steep cliffs for surveys and mapping, wade across the turbulent Jinsha River for surveying and mapping, and drill into narrow caverns for simulation tests. With the joint efforts of all parties, Baihetan Hydropower Station has overcome 16 world-class scientific and technological problems and achieved 127 key technological breakthroughs.
In June 2021, the first batch of units of Baihetan Hydropower Station was put into operation safely and on time. Zhang Chunsheng's joy was beyond words: "I finally look forward to this day!" ”
When we invited foreign experts, they shook their heads and repeatedly questioned China's inability to build a high-arch dam and a large reservoir at Baihetan. But you see, we got down anyway. Zhang Chunsheng said proudly, "As long as we have a heart and are not afraid of hard work, there is no hard bone that cannot be gnawed." ”
