From mastering destiny to conquering key core technologies

The importance of oil and gas storage and transportation pipelines is self-evident, connecting the upstream and downstream industries of the petroleum industry. After graduating from university, Li Fengqi joined the former Sinopec Beijing Design Institute (one of the predecessors of the engineering construction company), engaged in the research and development and design of oil and gas storage and transportation engineering technology. Here, he harvested the most important accumulation and precipitation of his scientific research career, and the corporate culture of "hard work and self-reliance" profoundly influenced him.
As a high-quality clean energy, LNG has the advantages of high storage efficiency, low operation and maintenance costs, safety and reliability, and is widely used in the world. The construction of LNG receiving stations in China started late, and at the beginning of development, the core technology, main equipment and materials of LNG were controlled by others.
In 2013, in order to promote the independence and localization of key technologies and equipment, Li Fengqi, then the technical director of the Tianjin LNG project, took the lead and presided over the development of "complete sets of technology development and industrial application of safe, efficient and environmentally friendly large-scale LNG receiving stations", which was selected as Sinopec's "Ten Dragons" research project.
Although we started more than 10 years later than others, we have developed our own complete set of technologies through team efforts to achieve corner overtaking. Li Fengqi said with a smile.
Learn the software, select the process path, find the right material, debug the parameters ......The process of going from "0" to "1" is like climbing a mountain, the mountain road is far away and the trail is hard to find, but the line is coming. Li Fengqi led the team to "compete" with key core technologies, and evaporative gas (BOG) recondensation technology is one of them.
The storage temperature of LNG is about minus 160 degrees Celsius, and a large amount of evaporative gas will be generated after absorbing external heat during unloading, storage and transportation. How to process boil-off gas safely and efficiently? After more than a year of trial and error, Li Fengqi and his team finally succeeded in creating a high-efficiency BOG recondensation technology with Sinopec's independent intellectual property rights - microporous gas-liquid premixed integrated cyclone enhanced recondensation process technology.
This technology achieves a 100% recondensation efficiency in one pass, which is much higher than that of the traditional packed tower BOG recondenser, and can reduce the minimum export capacity of the LNG receiving station by 30%. In Tianjin LNG receiving station alone, 80,000 tons of evaporative gas can be used every year, which has good economic benefits. This technology also won the China Patent Excellence Award in 2021.
When I really do it, I don't know day and night. "When you are sleepy, you will lie down with your clothes, and when you are hungry, you will simply eat a boxed lunch, it is with such tenacity that Li Fengqi and his team gnawed down one "hard bone" after another. At the critical stage of project construction, Li Fengqi stayed at the site for more than 100 consecutive days to solve all kinds of problems that occurred on the site in a timely manner.
In 2018, the Tianjin LNG terminal using this complete set of technology achieved a successful start-up of its own operation, creating a record for the shortest time for the first ship of the LNG terminal to start commissioning in port, the fastest record for the first export of LNG tankers, and the fastest record for the smooth operation of the BOG recondensing ** system.
From grasping the destiny to conquering the key core technology, he successfully opened the door to self-reliance and self-reliance in the complete set of technology of China's LNG receiving station. According to the appraisal of academicians and experts organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the complete set of technologies has reached the international advanced level as a whole, and the key technologies have reached the international leading level.

In 2019, the "complete set of technology development and industrial application of safe, efficient and environmentally friendly large-scale LNG receiving station" was successfully launched. If this is the realization of the process from "0" to "1", then the next step is the process of going from "1" to "100".
How can you keep up with the times and upgrade this technology? He and his team found that due to technical limitations, the utilization rate of cold energy in LNG receiving stations at home and abroad is generally low, and a large amount of cold energy is lost with seawater discharge during gasification. In 2022, Li Fengqi once again presided over the development of the "Ten Dragons" research project - "Key Technologies of Multi-energy Coupling LNG Receiving Stations", and proposed a new idea of deep coupling and utilization of cold and heat energy between LNG receiving stations, petrochemical plants and thermal power plants, so as to maximize energy utilization.
At present, the high-efficiency energy transmission pipeline from Tianjin LNG terminal to Tianjin Nangang ethylene project has been basically completed, which can save 6,890 tons of fuel gas for the receiving station every year and save 1100 million kWh.
This new technology is leading, but there is still some room for improvement in energy efficiency. After objective analysis, Li Fengqi found a new direction for research improvement.

On November 2, 2023, the world's first 270,000 cubic meter LNG storage tank was officially put into operation at Sinopec Qingdao LNG Terminal, realizing the engineering innovation in the construction of ultra-large LNG storage tanks and making a major breakthrough in key core technologies in the LNG field.
Li Fengqi told reporters that the LNG storage tank from 160,000 cubic meters to 220,000 cubic meters, and then to 270,000 cubic meters, this process is not a simple calculation. To this end, they carried out the research on "overall stability analysis technology of steel dome with skin plate of ultra-large cryogenic storage tank", and fundamentally overcame the technical problems of stability and safety of steel dome; A new model of the dynamic system of the 6-buttress multi-harness prestressing system and the fluid-structure coupling seismic isolation structure was established, which successfully solved the seismic design problem of large-scale storage tanks in the high-intensity area, and formed the core technology of localization of large-scale prestressed concrete all-inclusive LNG storage tanks.
The smooth commissioning of this storage tank has also increased the annual transfer capacity of Qingdao LNG receiving station to 11 million tons and the gas supply capacity to 16.5 billion cubic meters, officially entering the ranks of 10 million ton LNG receiving stations.
At present, with the efforts of Li Fengqi and other experts and teams, the engineering construction company has successfully developed a complete set of LNG receiving station technology with Sinopec's independent intellectual property rights, and has built and put into operation 15 large-scale LNG storage tanks with a total natural gas storage capacity of 1.7 billion cubic meters. The engineering design and construction technology of large-scale LNG storage tanks have all been localized, and the localization rate of construction materials has increased from 60% in 2013 to more than 95% now.
The remaining 5% is not localized, which is what we will overcome in the future. I love creative work, but I'm afraid that work is like a stagnant pool of water. In terms of engineering technology research and development, Li Fengqi has always adhered to the principle of "doing leading technology if you want to do it".
