Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky (1863-1944) was a chemist and famous photographer who pioneered the use of color photography in the early 20th century, photographing many precious colors.
Around 1905, Prokudin-Gorsky decided to use his new technology to document the history, culture, and technology of the Imperial Russian era for future generations to learn. With the support of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), he was granted the privilege of free filming on the territory of the empire. Not only did he own a mobile darkroom, but he also received official funding and privileged access to restricted areas, leaving behind a wealth of valuable photographic records of the imperial era between 1909 and 1915.
