On January 31, when the rain of golden ribbons fell on the field, all the members of the "Xiangyang" debate team of the National University of Defense Technology jointly raised the championship. From entering the finals of the Chinese Debate World Cup for the first time in 2016 to winning the championship now, this team, which includes military cadets and local non-military students, covering all levels of undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees, has been singing all the way.
This is not only a prominent embodiment of the school's grassroots clubs in cultural education, but also a vivid epitome of the school's deepening of the reform of the talent training model and the innovation of the talent training system over the years.
Charge to the top
Back to January 26th. On that day, the debating team lost their first game, which could well lead to a direct exit from the group stage.
In the blood of soldiers, there is a never-say-die spiritual gene. The teacher who led the team repeatedly cheered up the players. The hard work paid off, and in the end, the debate team advanced to the knockout round with a one-point advantage.
The rest of the race has not been easy.
The debate for the semi-finals was titled "Memories of Amazing Times Are a Gift of Curse". However, there was only 3 hours left for everyone to prepare for the debate, and the coaching team immediately divided labor and led the team members to complete the preparation of materials from arguments, questions, cross-examinations, free debates to final debates.
The participating team members also lived up to expectations, and completed the solid output of the debate in the "fierce confrontation" again and again.
Once tried the edge
In the face of the final topic "Culture going to sea should be based on the national world", as a doctor of Marxist theory, Liu Zhengxin gave full play to his professional expertise and put forward the use of a community with a shared future for mankind as the main thesis. The instructor immediately gave theoretical and empirical guidance on the viewpoint.
First-class Beidou, the world's Beidou. The mission of our generation is not only to seek rejuvenation for the nation, but also to seek harmony for the world! In the closing session, the wonderful speeches of the contestants received warm applause from the audience.
When the host announced that the debate team of the National University of Defense Technology had won the championship, the coaches and players waiting for the results on the court couldn't help but hug and cry. Team member Hu Ling won the "Best Debate" of the event with her outstanding performance, and Liu Zhengxin and Wang Sixin won many Best Debaters.

What kind of people are behind a champion team?
In 2014, the debate team was formed. In the early days of its establishment, the debate team lacked actual combat opportunities and had a slightly small number of members.
Although the conditions were difficult, no one gave up easily. Invite top coaches to provide guidance, hold lectures, reserve a lot of knowledge, polish language skills, strengthen the means of expression ......Relying on the tenacious struggle, the team's professional ability and competitive level have improved year by year, and the team members have increased from more than 20 to more than 200.
Gradually, the players began to win some games. In 2016, the debate team qualified to represent Changsha in the finals of the Chinese Debate World Cup. In 2021, he reached the quarterfinals of the Chinese Debate World Cup Finals for the first time. Although they faltered, they always walked firmly.
Solidarity and cooperation may be the secret code for the debate team to achieve the next victory.
Nowadays, the school's grassroots club has become a big classroom for teachers and students to acquire knowledge and cultivate sentiment, and a big platform for tempering and showing themselves. The campus cultural atmosphere continues to be strong, a series of cultural and sports activities are booming, and a large number of high-quality and professional new military talents with both ability and political integrity have taken root and grown in the fertile soil of HKUST.

Wang Sixin
When he lifted the championship trophy, he leaned on his horse and sighed with emotion. Seven years ago, when I first joined the school debate team, the debate team had just been established for two years, the number of members was small, and the debate experience was thin.
It was a long and difficult process to go from not having four players on the field to making their mark at national events. In 2022, the school established a debate club, the management of the team is more standardized and orderly, and with the addition of the country's top debate coaches, we are becoming more and more confident and stronger!
After nine years of perseverance, we finally reached the top podium of Chinese debate. In the future, we will take this achievement with us to speak out for truth and justice, and strive for our dreams and the future.
ZHANG Yuan
In this competition, we learned about the development significance of AI technology, cultural going overseas, criticism of the original family, etc., collided with views from different perspectives, stimulated sparks, and showed the world the confident and open spirit and unique youthful demeanor of the students of the National Defense University of Science and Technology.
What impressed me the most was that in the first game of the game, we lost to the favorite by 4:5 votes, the whole team was a little depressed and even pessimistic, and the teacher kept cheering us up and encouraging us to fight to the end and win the final victory. We quickly adjusted our preparation strategy and finally won by a narrow margin.
This experience made me deeply feel that no success is always smooth sailing, no matter what the circumstances, we must maintain the spirit of revolutionary optimism of never giving up and fighting to the end, and time and hard work will give us the answer.
Liu Zhengxin
The moment the organizers announced that we had won the championship, the dreamy golden ribbon rained down, and all the tension, anxiety and effort during the race turned into the sweetest fruit.
In the finals, we focused on the national world where culture should go to sea, gave full play to the advantages of the University of Science and Technology, and mainly talked about building a community with a shared future for mankind, the Belt and Road Initiative, the Beidou spirit and other views, which won more recognition from the judges.
This is a triumph of debating skill and eloquence, but also of opinion and value. Special thanks to the instructors of the debate team for providing us with rich and comprehensive academic support, allowing us to ride the wind and waves on the court!
Hu Ling
From January 25th to January 31st, after 6 races, we finally managed to win the championship. It was a great adventure for me. As I said in the game, "If all the memories of time and space were to be regarded as a curse, we wouldn't even be able to get on this stage and enjoy every moment." "In the debate, we strive to find the truth, to listen, to express, and to leave a memory of an amazing time.
Togetherness was the key to our victory, with only four players in each game, but off the pitch, the rest of the team prepared together and encouraged each other. This competition is the retirement battle of Senior Sixin, and we have prepared a banner for him to celebrate his glorious retirement, and treat each game as the last one. This banner accompanied us all the way to the finals, and finally won the championship, and I also won the best debate, which should be the most unforgettable memory of my career at HKUST, I love debate!
Qiang Rongjie
We did it! When the final score is fixed at "75：7.5", we ended up winning with more tiebreakers, and at that moment, we hugged each other tightly.
In the competition, although we were worried about the traditional strong team in the debate, the strength of the soldiers who dared to fight and never admit defeat always inspired us. Every time I stand on the debate stage, it is a new self-challenge; Behind every outstanding performance of the debater is the revision and practice over and over again.
Behind the success of a game, there are many players who did not play and the joint efforts of the coaching team. Thanks to the teachers and seniors for their all-round support and perseverance in the debate, and to the generations of HKUST debaters who continue to struggle, we stand on the shoulders of our predecessors.
Pan Tong
On the afternoon of January 26, I finished my last exam of the semester and hurriedly boarded the plane to Beijing. Before boarding, the first group game was underway, but when we landed, we received the news of a 5-4 defeat. The broadcast "Welcome to Beijing" sounded at the right time, but we were not in the mood to feel the welcome of Beijing at that time. Fortunately, we found life in despair, and after ups and downs, we finally won the crown.
When I was introduced to undergraduate debate, I was fortunate to meet the best teachers and class leaders to guide me, and I couldn't help but yearn for the impassioned presentation of the debaters on the court—I also wanted to be the one who led the debate team to victory and made the cadets shine on the world stage.
Now that the old squad leaders who led us to victory are facing retirement, we will take over the baton in their hands and continue to write the self-confidence and glory of the National Defense Science and Technology University with our own expression.
Recalling the phrase "Welcome to Beijing" announced at the airport, in fact, it also has the second half of the sentence "I hope you have a good time in Beijing". I am very happy, because God rewards hard work, after thousands of tests, we finally won the championship!
