"Metasequoia Nature Classroom".

Metasequoia, as a national first-class key protected wild plant, has witnessed the development and research process of Chinese botany from the discovery, naming, research, protection and global promotion and application, and also represents the important role of botanical gardens in plant protection and application, and contains the cultural genes of plant science.

From Metasequoia to Metasequoia Nature Classroom, Shanghai Botanical Garden hopes to inherit the spiritual connotation of research, conservation, and dissemination education, and continue to sow the seeds of plant culture based on the plant science of the special garden, so as to promote the public to learn, nourish and grow in nature. Through local interactive and participatory nature education activities, the Botanical Garden will play an educational role and work with the public to protect nature and biodiversity.

It includes 57 species of wild plants under national key protection (level I and II), and 129 species threatened on the IUCN Red List, including 11 critically endangered (CR), 38 endangered (EN) and 37 vulnerable (VU) species. In the Rare and Endangered Plants section of the Shanghai Botanical Garden Exhibition Greenhouse (II), about 50 species of orchids will be displayed periodically. Not only that, but there are also many orchid horticultural varieties on display in the exhibition greenhouse.

The story of conservation

Since 2011, the Shanghai Botanical Garden has attached great importance to the collection and introduction of orchids and ex situ conservation, and has organized many expeditions to Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi and other places to study the wild survival and in-situ status of orchids, and collect basic data for the ex situ conservation of orchids.

Artistic modeling of orchid plants**

After scientific observation and learning, we also invite you to use the tool of twisting the rod to design the structure of the observed orchid into parts, assemble and make an orchid in your eyes, and leave a footnote of memory for this orchid learning journey.

The twist rod, also known as velvet flower strips, has strong plasticity and can maintain its shape after being bent and folded. The production of velvet flowers began in the Tang Dynasty, with the homonym "Ronghua", which means auspiciousness and blessing. The production process of velvet flower strips is cumbersome, while the twist rod looks similar to velvet flower strips, and it is simple to make, and it does not require too many processes to experience the visual enjoyment brought by fluffy flowers.
