In September 1988, the PLA reinstated the military rank system, and unlike before, the ranks of marshal and general were no longer established. Thus, the rank of general became the highest rank in the army.
Since the introduction of the rank system, there have been no female generals, but the following female comrades have been awarded the rank of lieutenant general or major general. Because of the large number of people, the author has counted female generals before the 21st century, and if there are any omissions, please add them.
1.Li Zhen
Comrade Li Zhen was born in 1908 in Liuyang, Hunan. In 1955, Comrade Li Zhen was awarded the rank of major general, becoming the first female general in New China and the only one at that time.
Comrade Li Zhen served as secretary general of the Political Department of the Chinese People's Volunteers and deputy chief procurator of the Military Procuratorate of the Supreme People's Procuratorate; on March 11, 1990, Comrade Li Zhen died in Beijing at the age of 82.
2.Nie Li
Comrade Nie Li was born in September 1930 in Jiangjin District, Chongqing. In 1988, Comrade Nie Li was awarded the rank of major general, and on July 24, 1993, he was promoted to lieutenant general, becoming the first female lieutenant general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
Comrade Nie Li once served as deputy director of the Science and Technology Department of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of National Defense, and deputy director and secretary general of the Science and Technology Committee of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. Comrade Nie Li's father is a marshal, and his husband is General Ding Henggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the family has made outstanding contributions to the construction of the army.
3.Li Xikai
Comrade Li Xikai was born in 1932 in Luoxi Township, Wuning County, Jiangxi Province. In 1988, Comrade Li Xikai was awarded the rank of major general.
Comrade Li Xikai once held the posts of president and political commissar of the Second Affiliated Hospital of the Third Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
4.Wu Xiaoheng
Comrade Wu Xiaoheng was born in 1932 and is a native of Hong'an, Hubei. In 1988, Comrade Wu Xiaoheng was awarded the rank of major general.
Comrade Wu Xiaoheng once served as the former vice president of the First Military Medical University.
5.Hu Feipei
Comrade Hu Feipei was born in Columbus, USA, in 1930, and graduated from Fudan University in 1949. In 1988, Comrade Hu Feipei was awarded the rank of Major General.
Comrade Hu Feipei once served as the vice president of the Foreign Chinese Institute of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. He was awarded the first prize of outstanding teaching achievements in military academies in 1993 by the three general departments of the People's Liberation Army.
6.Liao Wenhai
Comrade Liao Wenhai was born in May 1934 in Shanghai. In 1988, he was awarded the rank of Major General.
He has successively served as Deputy Director of the Third Clinical Department of the PLA General Hospital, Vice President and President of the PLA General Hospital, Alternate Member of the 13th and 14th ** Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Member of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. On January 19, 2009, Liao Wenhai passed away in Beijing at the age of 74.
7.Zhao Zhiwen
Comrade Zhao Zhiwen was born in August 1935 in Shanghai, Cixi, Zhejiang, and was promoted to the rank of major general in 1990.
He used to be the vice president of the PLA Institute of International Relations, a professor, and a master's supervisor.
8.Qiao Peijuan
Qiao Peijuan, a native of Qiqihar, Heilongjiang, was awarded the rank of major general in 1990.
Qiao Peijuan once served as the political commissar of the People's Liberation Army Academy of Arts. In 1995, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for Victory of the Chinese People's Liberation Army by the ** Military Commission.
9.Peng Gang
Comrade Peng Gang was born in November 1938 in Xiangtan, Hunan. In June 1991, he was awarded the rank of Major General.
Comrade Peng Gang has served as the director of the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), deputy secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Central Military Commission, vice chairman of the All-China Women's Federation, and member of the Standing Committee of the 14th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. On June 24, 2014, Peng Gang died of illness at the age of 76. Comrade Peng Gang is also a descendant of the founding fathers and the niece of Marshal ***.
10.Deng Xianqun
Comrade Deng Xianqun was born in December 1935 in Guang'an, Sichuan. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in July 1993.
Comrade Deng Xianqun once served as director of the Mass Work Department of the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army. Deng Xianqun is the younger sister of Comrade ***.
11.Wang Xiaotang
Comrade Wang Xiaotang was born in January 1934 in Kaifeng, Henan. In 1993, he was awarded the rank of Major General.
Comrade Wang Xiaotang has served as the vice chairman of the China Film Association and the director of Bayi Film Studio.
12.Zhong Yuzheng
Comrade Zhong Yuzheng was born in 1930 in Hong Kong, a native of East Maning, Xingtan, Shunde District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province. Professor of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Chemical Defense Command Engineering College, master's tutor, military scientist, chemical analysis expert.
13.Chao Fuhuan
Comrade Chao Fuhuan was born in 1942 in Tianjin, and his ancestral home is Chaozhuang, Leting County, Hebei Province. In July 1994, he was promoted to the rank of major general, and served as a member of the Medical Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Health of the General Logistics Department, and the head of the military health professional group.
14.Shao Hua
Comrade Shao Hua was born in October 1938 in Yan'an, a native of Changde, Hunan. In 1995, he was awarded the rank of Major General.
Comrade Shao Hua successively served as deputy director of the Encyclopedia Department of the Academy of Military Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
He is a member of the 7th, 8th and 93rd National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and concurrently serves as the deputy secretary-general of the Military Science Society, the chairman of the China Women Photographers Association, the deputy secretary-general of the Military Encyclopedia Society, the president of Guangzhou Songtian Vocational College, and the honorary vice president of the China Flower Association. In 2004, she was rated as "Top Ten Women Talents in China".
Comrade Shao Hua is the wife of Comrade Mao Anqing, and has a son with Comrade Mao Anqing, and is also the only grandson of Comrade ***.
15.He Jiesheng
Comrade He Jiesheng was born in November 1935 in Sangzhi County, Hunan Province, and was awarded the rank of major general in 1996. He served as the head of the Military Encyclopedia Research Department of the Academy of Military Sciences. Comrade He Jiesheng is the daughter of the ** marshal.
16.Yang Junsheng
Comrade Yang Junsheng was born in 1943 in Yi County, Hebei Province, and was originally from Changting, Fujian. On July 17, 1996, Yang Junsheng was awarded the rank of major general, the first female general since the establishment of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force. He has served as a staff officer of the Science and Technology Department of the Second Artillery Force Headquarters, deputy director of the Police Equipment Division, director of the Technical Equipment Division, director of the Technical Equipment Department and director of the Science and Technology Development Department of the Armed Police Force Headquarters, and deputy director of the Traffic Command of the Armed Police Force.
17.Wang Xiaozhong
Comrade Wang Xiaozhong was born in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in 1944 and was promoted to the rank of major general in July 1997.
Comrade Wang Xiaozhong has served as director of the medical department of the PLA General Hospital, secretary of the party committee of the ministry, member of the standing committee of the party committee of the hospital, and chairman of the science and technology committee of the PLA General Hospital.
18.Zhu Fengrong
Comrade Zhu Fengrong was born in 1942 and graduated from the Department of Engineering and Physics of Tsinghua University in 1966. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in July 1997. He used to be a researcher at the nuclear test base of the Ministry of Reserve.
Before the 21st century, a total of 18 female comrades were awarded the rank of general, most of them were major generals, and only Comrade Nie Li was a lieutenant general. They are role models for female friends and deserve to be called "half the sky"!
