AlthoughOf course, everyone will go differently in the future, and the confusion will be different, but when the cocktail of the tupper&reed bar is shaken,A lot of things get better and more in conversation. Looking back on the past few years of studying abroad, compared with what I learned in class, the studious and fun companions around me have brought me more gains. “

The world is ridiculous, I go to paint housesImmerse yourself in building your own utopia"If you just put your head down and do it, you will find wonderful things. ”

Originally, the title wanted to use this sentence, but when I was writing this article, I happened to see a sentence from Kafka's diary that is more in line with my recent mentality: Kafka's diaries:

August 2, 1914. Germany declared war on **. - Went swimming in the afternoon. ”

For a long time, I didn't feel like I was a very realistic person. I don't care about current affairs, I don't care about prices, and I don't care about which people are living in dire straits. Later, after a while, life became realistic, and people became anxious, perhaps more of a sense of powerlessness, and found that it was useless to care.

That's when people need to find an outlet. Architecture, or design, provides me with an outlet (of course, there is more than one, watching movies, reading books, bathing, cooking, etc.). It allows me to temporarily go to a place that is at a certain distance from reality and build my own utopia.

But it's complicated to build a house. I want to live a relaxed life, as long as I can make something interesting, even if it ends up on paper. I'm still working towards this goal, and I don't like the design yet, but I like it. Every time I make a plan, I have a new idea through various regrets: Eh, it might be better if I had followed this path in the first place! I thought about trying again next time, and then it was a process from expectation to disappointment to new hope. In the process, I can really feel what I am after, and I believe that if I put my head down and do it, I can find wonderful things.

Burst Drummer Movie Poster NetworkDon't worry, talk to yourself"Make a good design"? "Make a design you like"? I am a slow person to react, and my thinking about architecture is naturally half a beat slower than others. At that time, the interesting architects and architectural concepts in the undergraduate were basically fed by the big guys in the class (I also read it, but I just thought that what others said was more interesting), and then I followed suit, but fortunately, I relied on my hard work when I was young, and the final results were reasonable.

But here's the problemLike meOldAfter studying for a few years, I haven't really thought about what I want. When he mentioned the concepts of regionality, place spirit, metabolism, and form following function, he seemed to be trying to prove that he was a part of the discourse system constructed by architecture. At that time, I thought that I could rush all the way abroad with this kind of hard work. It wasn't until I was working on my portfolio that I had to stop and talk to myself.

Just started the portfolio with a dead heart to do the plan, not good to make xdTo this day, I still see the year or so of my portfolio as one of the most important turning points in my understanding of architecture.

At the beginning, I jumped out of the box of traditional college professional courses, and even lost my understanding of what good design is. How do I make a portfolio that represents me personally? What are the features of my design? PS How to write? At that time, I anxiously flipped through issuu every day and didn't find an answer. The most painful thing was also in the first few months of the most ambitious, in order to make his portfolio unique, he learned from the particularly complex and unclear works of the great gods that he saw on the Internet, and made an evolo-style urban design transformation on the scale of urban design that criticized modernism and China's urban development, combined with classical garden research, transparency, and geopolitics.

This most time-consuming and laborious project didn't end up in my portfolio, but these painful months really made me realize that I am a person who is more emotional than rational, superficial than profound. Rather than saving the world in a macro narrative, I still prefer to play in the world in subjective emotions. When it was decided to abandon the project,Let's be honestI even felt a sense of relief that I could finally make my own design.

XD's interesting thing is that when I wrote this article, I turned out this desperate plan, and it didn't seem so unbearable to look at it again, but it was so difficult to accept at the beginning. Perhaps this is the difference between "making a good design" and "making a design you like". It won't be that hard to take it easy and just think about making something you love. But every stroke is trying to make something that everyone says is good, and it must be very tiring to stay up until the end.

Looking back now, thankfully it was during the time when I was preparing the portfolioThe immature thinking did not drift away with the end of the application, but provided me with a coordinate originDuring the period of studying abroad and working in the future, I was able to continue to explore in the coordinate system formed by my initial thoughts. Each fork in the road leads to the nextAn introverted journeyStudying abroad is a path that I decided to pursue when I was in high school, even if I didn't study architecture. In fact, there is no reason, I just feel that I have to go out and see, and feel the impact of cultural differences while I am young.

Because I studied in China as an undergraduate, the sense of difference is naturally reflected in the teaching mode. But personally, the difference is actually similar to what I imagined: most schools in China have a more pragmatic architectural education, which is a kind of architectural practice education, where students will follow their mentors to do practical projects, and after graduation, they can achieve a seamless transition from student status to work status; The scope of architectural education in foreign countries (the United States) is broader, and it is based on architectural academic education to diversify from side disciplines.

Looking at the work later, there are pros and cons to both.

UCB's most popular course, CS 61A, has been changed to an online course XD since last year because of the large number of students who choose courses every yearWhat made me feel the deep impact was actually the "sense of individuality" leached out of the diverse environment. During the undergraduate years, everyone received a similar education model and at roughly the same pace, and this commonality created a relatively stable environment. However, after going abroad for graduate school, people of different ages, cultures, and countries get together, and everyone has different plans for the future, which can also be seen from the course selection: because most of the courses in all Berkeley colleges are open to all students, many students will take courses in computer science, finance, interaction, film and other courses every year, and some students who focus on a certain field of architecture will use these years to complete all the required electives in that direction.

Some people will take a double degree in another major during their graduate studies, and some people will go on internship tours to other countries after completing their first year of study. Such an "individual" environment stimulates me to often compare and reflect on my own research direction and life plan, and to explore and construct my own thinking framework, gradually in the processForm some self-choice and persistence.

Gap year interned in France, and I actually ate hot pot as delicious as in China XD In fact, the portfolio dilemma is the same as the one mentioned before, and there is only one fundamental question: what do you want? The more things you see when you go abroad, the more possible answers you have, so this may be a question that you can't figure out for a lifetime.

But the good thing isIn this lonely journey of inward searching, there are other lonely companions. Although everyone will have different directions and confusion in the future, when the cocktail of the tupper & reed bar is shaken, many things will always be talked about more and more thoroughly. Looking back on the past few years of studying abroad, compared with what I learned in class, the studious and fun companions around me have brought me more gains. About Berkeley's 2-Year Architecture ProgramTeaching Context:Urban society - the building itself - the details of constructionCompared to other architecture schools on the West Coast that are known for their pioneering, Berkeley's architectural education is more traditional. Each semester, under the leadership of a big theme, there will be several studios with different styles to choose from.

Take mFor example, in the first semester of the ARCH 2 project, the theme is urbanism, and each studio encourages students to think about design from the perspective of the city and society. It is worth mentioning that in the semester of Urbanism Studio, the school will organize all students to go to an unfamiliar city for a week-long field trip under the guidance of the studio teacher. Students were asked to write something like a research report after their trip and were able to feed back into the course design.

In Montreal's Field Trip, we were asked to photograph the billboards in the city from a close-up-building-street scaleIn the second semester, the theme of studio will return to architectural design, and the topics will be more diverseFor example, in my class, there was a Bauhaus renovation of the first form and structure, a university biological research center focusing on sustainable technology, a bionic architectural design with sea level rise as the starting point, and a housing project designed with business school and real estate students.

The integrated studio in the third semester is more practical, which condenses the whole cycle of a building from schematic design to construction drawing design into an intensive design course in one semester. At different stages of the semester, consultants from various majors will join in to put forward optimization suggestions for the implementation of the plan, and the whole process is very similar to the mode of putting forward conditions and counter-conditions for a major in actual work. Students are expected to consider a variety of real-world issues such as local codes, construction costs, and structural rationality. It is equivalent to letting students understand in advance the various problems they will face after actual work.

There are also thesis throughout the second year. In the first semester, students are required to determine their thesis topic and develop a theory through weekly discussions with their supervisors, and the next semester is to make a design project based on this theory.

At the end of each semester, the final review of each major can feel a high density of collision of ideas@ced China Berkeley Finally, whether you are leaving or staying behind, I hope this short article can help friends who are still looking for answers to reduce their anxiety and provide some positive emotional value.
