Durham University's 2024 Language Course Application Guide and FAQ
Applications are now open for Durham University's Pre-sessional Language Classes 2024!
Durham University's Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) offers a variety of English for Academic Learning programmes to provide students with different needs with options to improve their language skills. Students who have been admitted to Durham University can choose a pre-sessional language course, whether they have achieved the required level of English or need to improve their language skills by taking an English course.
So, what courses are offered in the pre-sessional in 2024?
The 2024 pre-sessional offers 20-week, 10-week and 6-week courses, all of which will be delivered in person.

How to apply for a language course
Master's and doctoral students should first submit their English scores that meet the application requirements of the language course in the applicant portal, and then apply to add the language course conditions to the existing offer before the deadline, and then confirm the submission of the language course application by selecting the language course option next to the offer in the portal within the deadline.
If you already have language class conditions on the existing offer, you can directly confirm the submission of the language class application in the portal.

1.What language scores can I use to apply for a language course?
Recognized English scores for language classes include IELTS, TOEFL, TOEFL HOME, PTE, Password Online.

2.Is a SELT English score required?
When applying for a language course, if there are still academic requirements that are not met, you need to use the SELT English score (you can choose IELTS UKVI or PTE UKVI) to apply for the language course. Such students will be issued a Single CAS for visa processing.
Students who apply for the 6-week and 10-week language courses can apply with other recognized language scores if they have already met the academic requirements. These students will receive a Combined CAS for visa processing.
3.If I have already met the English language requirements, can I still apply for a language course?
If you have met the required English language requirements but still want to improve your English academic skills through language classes, you are welcome to apply for a 6-week or 10-week language course. If you have applied for a language class if you have met the English language requirements, you will also need to take the unified test of the language class, and after passing, you can successfully enter the main course.
4.What is the mode of delivery of the language course?
Classes are usually scheduled from Monday to Friday, with 25-30 hours of study per week, including class time (two 90-minute lessons per day with breaks in between), tutorial, self-study and homework and assessment tasks.
Language classes are small with about 10-15 students per class. Each class has at least two teachers. All course materials are available electronically. In addition to class time, each student will have one-on-one communication time with the teacher, who will provide targeted feedback and help for each student's situation.
In the first 10 weeks of the 20-week language course, students from all degree levels will study together, and the last 10 weeks will be taught separately according to the main courses at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels.
5.When is the tuition fee for a language course paid?
The tuition fee for the language course must be paid at least two weeks after the start of the course, and it is recommended that you pay in advance to ensure a smooth start of the course.
6.Can I cancel a language course after paying the tuition fee?
If you have an IELTS score that satisfies the direct entry requirement after paying the language course fee, you will have the opportunity to cancel the language course before the course starts and receive a refund. The latest date to cancel a 10-week language course is two weeks before the start of the course, and the latest date to cancel a 6-week language course is one week before the start of the course.
5.How do I choose accommodation for a language course?
Accommodation for language course students will be at Josephine Butler College. If your degree program is assigned to a college that is not this one, you can move to your main college after the language course.
6.How are language classes assessed?
Participate in at least 90% of the curriculum, including classes and seminars.
Complete all assessments, including formative tasks
Meet the relevant requirements of the department in the summative assessment.
Assessments include:
Complete the relevant writing tasks within the allotted time.

Complete individual interview-style listening tests with the teacher
7.Are there any extracurricular activities in addition to the course of study?
Josephine Butler College will provide a bespoke house experience for language students, including orientation, social activities, weekend excursions and other home experiences throughout the summer.
