Originally from Shaoxing, Zhejiang, Professor Sun Jun was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in October 1926. When the Japanese invaded Suzhou in November 1937, he moved with his family to Shanghai to study at Shanghai High School. When Sun Jun was a teenager, he dropped out of school for a year due to family difficulties, but he overcame many difficulties and laid a solid foundation in mathematics, physics and chemistry. In 1945, he was admitted to the Department of Civil Engineering of Shanghai National Jiaotong University with excellent results, but in that year, the bombing of Japanese invaders and American planes, and the blacklist of the Kuomintang as a representative of the department when he was a student at Jiao Tong University, etc., did not shake his belief and perseverance in studying.
In the year of graduation in May 1949, Sun Jun was not engaged in underground construction engineering, because he studied Russian for three years, and was directly transferred to be a professional translator for bridge experts in the Soviet Union at that time. At first, he was not familiar with the bridge major, but due to the needs of his work, he read and studied every day, and gradually developed a strong interest and fell in love with the bridge major. In 1959, due to the needs of national defense engineering at that time, he was transferred to the major of underground construction engineering. This was the need of the work at that time, and he had to start from scratch again, trying to get in, and his interest was spontaneously born. Soon after his new career, he was responsible for the survey and design of the first underground airport (aircraft hangar) in China, and then undertook and planned the design and construction of the first subway station in Shanghai. At that time, no one in the country could do such a project!

Professor Sun Jun has applied what he has learned in the ocean of knowledge and created huge economic benefits and wealth for the country.
In the early 80s, the underground works of large hydropower stations such as Lubuge and Tianshengqiao in Yunnan Province were once blocked due to complex geology and uncertain safety guarantees. Sun Jun was entrusted by the engineering department and immediately went to investigate and undertake the research task. He used the theory of rock rheology and engineering construction mechanics, and finally overcame the difficulties through in-depth research and repeated experiments. The research results also won the first prize of the Ministry of Water and Power Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Later, his theory was widely used in many underground projects in China.
In 1987, Qingdao began to prepare for the construction of the subway project. The problem of reasonable burial depth of Qingdao subway once puzzled many designers. Burying too deep not only increases the investment, prolongs the construction period, but also brings great inconvenience to the passenger flow. It is buried too shallowly and is afraid of lack of basis and not safe enough. Sun Jun, as an engineering consultant, made a theoretical demonstration from many aspects after on-site investigation and put forward a reasonable proposal to greatly reduce the buried depth of the subway, which was adopted by the construction unit, which greatly compressed the project investment, shortened the construction period, and also brought great convenience to the relief of the ground passenger flow, and the economic and social benefits were immeasurable.
The Chongqing section of the Chengdu-Chongqing Highway has four long and large tunnels, each of which is about 3 kilometers long. With such a large road tunnel, ventilation is a big problem. The original plan was confined to the normative provisions and did not dare to break through, and only considered the use of semi-horizontal ventilation. At the meeting to discuss this plan, experts from home and abroad gathered together and discussed one after another. As the leader of the advisory group of this project, Professor Sun Jun proposed a new plan at the meeting after in-depth on-site investigation and detailed data. He argued on the basis of reason, and for the first time boldly introduced the contemporary advanced level of jet longitudinal ventilation mode to these large and long highway tunnels in China. In this way, only one of the tunnels can save more than 30 million yuan for the country, which has been praised by experts and leading departments at home and abroad.
Lay a good foundation - it will be used for a lifetime
Back in the day, the teachers of SJTU always taught students to read through a few classic books to lay a solid foundation that will be inexhaustible for the rest of their lives. At that time, the school was on the eve of liberation, and the situation was turbulent, and the teachers and students could not settle down. But Sun Jun still read through several authoritative works recognized at that time, and did thousands of exercises. These books taught him a lot of knowledge and theories of civil and structural engineering, which gave him the foundation for further study.
Over the years, Professor Sun Jun has published more than 390 articles and 11 academic monographs, which have won many national awards.
Today, he is 98 years old, and although he is old, he is still young. As one of the first batch of doctoral students and postdoctoral supervisors in China, he has trained more than 80 doctoral students and 27 postdoctoral fellows, and has sent many pillars of talent to the country.
