How to ping the network on a Linux system

Mondo Technology Updated on 2024-02-23

In Linux, we can use the ping command to test the network connection. The ping command sends an ICMP Echo Request message to the specified destination, and if the network connection is working, the target returns an ICMP Echo Reply message.

Here are the basic steps to use the ping command:

Open Terminal: You can do this by clicking on the system menu"terminal"or"console", or use the shortcut key (usually Ctrl+Alt+T) to open the terminal.

Enter the ping command: In the terminal, you can enter the ping command followed by the ip address or domain name of the targetFor example, if you want to ping Google's public DNS servers, you can type ping 88.8.8。If you want to ping Google's, you can type ping wwwgoogle.com。Then press Enter to execute the command.

See the results: The ping command sends echo request messages consecutively and displays the round-trip time (RTT) for each message. If you see"request timeout"or"destination unreachable"and other error messages, then there may be a network problem.

Stop ping commands: By default, ping commands send echo request messages indefinitely. You can press Ctrl+C to stop the ping command and display the statistics.

This is the basic step to use the ping command in a Linux system. It's important to note that there may be some minor differences between Linux distributions, but the general process is the same.
