China's first national standard for river ecological security assessment, "Technical Guidelines for River Ecological Security Assessment" (hereinafter referred to as the "Guidelines"), was officially released recently. The standard is led by the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences and the China National Institute of Standardization, and jointly drafted by more than 20 domestic scientific research institutes, universities, enterprises and institutions, and will be implemented on April 1, 2024.

The Guidelines clarify the concept of river ecological security, stipulate the principles, work processes, index systems and evaluation methods of river ecological security assessment, put forward the index system, calculation methods and assignment standards of four special indicators, 12 sub-indicators and 28 evaluation indicators of river ecological environment pressure, river ecosystem health, river ecological service function and river ecological risk, and establish grading standards and result expression forms to characterize the degree of river ecological security.

The issuance of the Guidelines has made up for the inconsistency of the previous river ecological security assessment index system and methodology.

The shortcomings of the assessment results that cannot be quantitatively benchmarked provide important scientific and technological support for promoting the protection and governance of key river basins such as the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, and guarding the bottom line of water ecological security in the construction of a beautiful China.
