The Toronto Police Service (TPS) has announced that starting February 19, 2024, police will begin enforcing street parking regulations on specific dates.

In a press release, a Toronto Police Department spokesperson wrote that parking enforcement had not implemented a charge for on-street parking on statutory holidays in the past due to regulations and operational choices, but was now empowering the charge, noting that the change was "a response to our growing demand" as parking demand in the city increased significantly.

In addition, TPS said the City of Toronto needs roadside space to support streetcar corridors, bike lanes, cafétos and other infrastructure development projects.

A spokesperson wrote, "This change only relates to on-street parking and is enforced by the Toronto Police Service's Parking Enforcement Division".

This is an operational decision made by TPS, which is responsible for enforcing on-street parking enforcement. Historically, Toronto police non-enforcement has been a practice, but there is no explicit exemption from statutory holiday on-street parking, so this change is consistent with existing regulations.

On-street parking fees are controlled and collected by the City of Toronto.
