In 1971, the Chinese physicist Yang Zhenning was finally able to return to his homeland, this time his trip not only included visiting relatives and friends, but also had an important mission, which was to meet his father-in-law, Du Yuming.

So, how did Du Yuming's daughter meet Yang Zhenning? As a senior general of the Kuomintang, how did Du Yuming transform from the Kuomintang to the builder of New China?

Let's explore the story behind this history.

Du Yuming was a high-profile Kuomintang officer, however, in his early years, he repeatedly faced danger to his life during his military career. His family background was superior, his father was a nobleman, and even a member of the League, and he was expected to pursue a career in literature or politics.

However, Du Yuming firmly believed that China needed a strong army, so he deceived his father by claiming that he was going to Beijing to take the university entrance exam. He took advantage of the travel and tuition fees given to him by his father, and went to Guangzhou instead, and also met some like-minded fellow villagers and embarked on the journey together.

However, when they arrived in Guangzhou, they missed the recruitment time for the Huangpu Military Academy. Fortunately, Du Yuming found his father's old friend Yu Youren and asked him to intercede with Chiang Kai-shek.

In the end, the four of them were able to get a place in the supplementary record.

Du Yuming is a man of few words but a brilliant talent, and although he has excellent grades, he does not like to show off in front of others. Chiang Kai-shek was very optimistic about him and felt that he was calm and atmospheric.

However, his military career was full of twists and turns. His military academy classmates have all joined the army, and he is still recuperating in GuangzhouWhile his classmates began to achieve small feats, he wandered through various prisons and was nearly beheaded several times.

When he finally had the opportunity to meet Chiang Kai-shek, he was not offered an appointment because of his lack of actual combat experience. However, Du's talent cannot be overlooked, and once he seizes the opportunity, he can achieve results quickly.

Xu Tingyao, the commander of the army division, discovered his training talent and appreciated him very much. When Chiang Kai-shek formed the first armored corps, Xu Tingyao recommended Du Yuming as the first commander of the armored corps.

And his troops, which later became one of the absolute main forces of the Kuomintang.

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Du Yuming led his Fifth Army to engage in fierce battles with the 21st Brigade of the Fifth Division, known as the "Steel Army". Although the enemy occupied the terrain and the best advantage, and arrived at Kunlun Pass before Du Yuming's troops, he found that as long as he first captured the enemy's two fortresses, he could form an encirclement situation.

After a bloody battle, Du Yuming successfully cut off the Japanese army's lines of communication and shattered the myth of the enemy's "steel army". Du Yuming was born in the Whampoa Military Academy and was loyal to Chiang Kai-shek, and even did not hesitate to implement his wrong decisions.

This moved Chiang Kai-shek very much, and after the crushing defeat of the troops, he not only did not blame Du Yuming, but promoted him to the commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army. By the time of the Liberation War, although Chiang Kai-shek's army was rapidly reduced, Du Yuming was still able to set up obstacles for the PLA and played a key role.

As the only high-ranking Kuomintang general captured by our army, Du Yuming's family suffered greatly because of Chiang Kai-shek's ruthlessness. After Du Yuming's defeat, Chiang Kai-shek took his wife and children to Taiwan, making them lose their use value, and even did not let Du Yuming's wife Cao Xiuqing meet them.

As a result, the Du family was forced to separate, and Du Yuming's mother died of illness in Taiwan and had no money for medical treatment. Although Cao Xiuqing was able to live on a little savings, the expenses of the family quickly used up the savings, and Du Yuming, as the defeated, Cao Xiuqing also failed to receive a pension.

In the end, how did the Du family reunite?

At that time, Du Yuming only wanted to fight for the national revolution, but he is now reflecting on his past actions in Gongdelin. Although he was provided with some conveniences, such as milk, fish, and chickens, the guards could only eat coarse grain steamed buns.

By reading books such as Mao Xuan and "On Protracted War", Du Yuming gained a deeper understanding of the CCP, and he realized how narrow his own thinking was before. In the end, he successfully persuaded the Kuomintang general Ma Shigong to give up resistance with a sincere letter of persuasion, clearing the obstacles for our army's battle to cross the river, and becoming his first contribution in New China.

Under Chiang Kai-shek's deliberate concealment, Du Yuming's wife Cao Xiuqing once mistakenly thought that he had died. Cao Xiuqing struggled in hardship, relying on the support of Du Yuming's old comrades-in-arms, and the family barely made ends meet.

Cao Xiuqing not only misses Du Yuming, but also misses her eldest daughter Du Zhili in the United States. Before Du Yuming went to the Northeast Battlefield, he sent Du Zhili to study in the United States, although this made it impossible for the family to reunite, but at least Du Zhili was free, which made Cao Xiuqing's heart feel a little relieved.

After arriving in the United States, Du Zhili met Yang Zhenning, who had taught her mathematics in China, and the two finally came together, which is also a good story.

1.During Du Yuming's tenure as commander-in-chief of Kunming's defense, his daughter Du Zhili was able to study at Southwest Associated University, while Yang Zhenning, who graduated with a master's degree and was waiting to go to the United States for further study, temporarily taught at the school during this period.

Yang Zhenning is five years older than Du Zhili, and Du Zhili, who is excellent in mathematics, regards this young girl with excellent mathematics as Prince Charming. Yang Zhenning also remembers Du Zhili vividly, because she is outstanding in mathematics and her father is the famous general Du Yuming.

Therefore, after the two reunited in the United States, the old relationship revived. But now it is no longer the young and restrained Yang Zhenning, but the retreating Du Zhili. 2.During Du Yuming's tenure as commander-in-chief of Kunming's defense, his daughter Du Zhili was able to study at Southwest Associated University.

When Du Zhili learned that her father had become a prisoner of war and her mother was confined to Taiwan Province, the future fate of the family was full of unknowns, and she began to grow from an innocent girl to a family that knew how to live a budget, and even transferred to a school with lower tuition fees in order to save money.

In her opinion, Yang Zhenning's father is a respected professor and has a bright future in his own right, while she herself is just a poor student and her father is a war criminal.

In order to avoid rejection in the future, she decided not to start the relationship. However, under Yang Zhenning's unremitting pursuit, Du Zhili finally let go of his worries and handed over the second half of his life to this person who had already been excited.

Although their wedding was blessed by Yang Zhenning's parents, Du Zhili couldn't let her parents know the news of her marriage.

Du Zhili finally got in touch with his mother after their separation, and they did their best to help her despite their financial situation, which brought Cao Xiuqing valuable comfort.

However, the Du family's plight in Taiwan became increasingly serious, and Cao Xiuqing had to apply for a bank loan, but Chiang Kai-shek gave only a very small part. In addition, Cao Xiuqing also heard that Du Yuming was not really dead, but was only imprisoned by the Communist Party, which made her even more determined to leave Taiwan Province.

In 1957, Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize as a "Chinese **", which made Chiang Kai-shek want to attract him to Taiwan.

After Chiang Kai-shek and his wife learned the identity of Yang Zhenning's lover, they immediately sent a driver to pick up Cao Xiuqing, and received him warmly with a smile on their faces, as if the previous cold words had never existed.

After Song Meiling's explanation, Cao Xiuqing smiled secretly in her heart and saw through the hypocritical mask of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife.

In order to leave Taiwan smoothly, she had to pretend to be obedient and embarked on a journey to the United States with the thought of her eldest daughter. At the same time, the mainland's *** specially went to Gongdelin to tell Du Yuming the good news that Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize, and asked him to tell his son-in-law on his behalf.

Du Yuming happily congratulated Yang Zhenning on his outstanding achievements and recognized him as his son-in-law in the letter, a news that surprised the delegation of Chinese scientists arranged by ***.

The delegation included Yang Zhenning's mentor, Zhang Wenyu and Wang Chengshu. Zhang Wenyu brought Du Yuming's letter to Yang Zhenning and brought back his reply. After Cao Xiuqing saw her husband's handwritten letter, she confirmed that he was still alive and burst into tears with excitement.

Yang Zhenning has great respect for Cao Xiuqing and will accompany her for a walk and chat whenever she wants. Although Chiang Kai-shek had hinted that he could go to Taiwan, Yang Zhenning calmly stated that his parents, father-in-law and wife were all staying on the mainland and that he would not choose Taiwan.

Cao Xiuqing is a person who values family, and she firmly believes that family is the most important thing. She spoke very highly of Chiang Kai-shek, believing him to be a man with a big heart and great care for his subordinates and friends.

Therefore, she had great respect and gratitude to Chiang Kai-shek and his wife.

Although Mr. and Mrs. Yang did their best to help Mr. Du enroll in school, he struggled when it came to obtaining a loan from a bank. Chiang Kai-shek agreed to approve only a $1,000 loan, which had to be repaid over two years.

The loan left Du Zhiren feeling deeply stressed, fearing that he would become a burden to his family, and eventually committed suicide by taking medication due to depression. This made Cao Xiuqing deeply hated Chiang Kai-shek, and it was impossible for her to really help him.

Cao Xiuqing revealed these circumstances to Yang Zhenning, just hoping to give the choice to Yang Zhenning. In 1959, Du Yuming was granted amnesty, became an ordinary citizen of New China, and served as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

He felt that his life had settled down, so he wrote a letter asking Cao Xiuqing to return to China. With the help of Yang Zhenning, Cao Xiuqing flew to Switzerland first, and my country specially arranged staff to receive her and send her on the plane back to China.

Although his family is scattered in the East and the West, Yang Zhenning has always cared about the motherland. In 1971, he wrote to his father with great anticipation, hoping to return to his homeland to visit his second elder.

The news made China ecstatic and warmly welcomed his return. In June of that year, he returned to his hometown as a Chinese-American visiting New China. He first met with his parents, classmates and friends, such as Deng Jiaxian, and learned about China's current scientific and technological development.

It was only in July that he was able to meet *** in Beijing and have dinner with his father-in-law, Guo Moruo and others in the Great Hall of the People. It was the first time he had met his father-in-law, and he was nervous even though he was already a well-known professor.

This special family banquet fully demonstrated Yang Zhenning's patriotic feelings and his deep longing for his family.

He can affectionately call Cao Xiuqing's mother, but when he calls Du Yuming, he calls him Mr. Du. **Haha laughed and said: You father-in-law, I already knew.

Weng and his son-in-law shook hands warmly, and Yang Zhenning said: Dad, we finally came to see you. Du Yuming still didn't say much, just replied: It's good to come back. It took 20 years for the family to be reunited, which was not easy, and among them, Taiwan Province's obstruction was layered, but it was as convenient as possible.

Within two years, Yang Zhenning frequently returned to China and recruited many outstanding Chinese-American scientists for the motherland, who injected new vitality into China's scientific research undertakings. Yang Zhenning goes to different domestic universities every year to set up scholarships to encourage young students to study hard and dare to innovate.

Du Yuming used to enjoy a high reputation in the Kuomintang army, and he actively publicized the state policy to Taiwan and strived to achieve reunification at an early date. Du Yuming has worked hard for the reunification of the motherland all his life, and his last words are that he hopes that his comrades-in-arms and relatives who are still stranded in Taiwan will give priority to the overall interests of the nation and return to the embrace of the motherland as soon as possible.
