Around the Spring Festival, two low-temperature rain, snow and freezing weather struck, and many trees broke their branches or even fell to the ground due to heavy snow and freezing rain. On the morning of the 23rd, the reporter visited the campus of Wuhan University and saw Kunpeng Square, Cherry Blossom Avenue, Administration Building, Wanlin Art Museum and other places where cherry blossom trees are concentrated. A few cherry blossom trees broke their branches after the wind and rain, and a few cherry blossom trees lay in the snow with mud on their roots.
Many citizens are worried: Can they still enjoy cherry blossoms in Wuhan University, East Lake Cherry Garden and other places this year? Will the flowering be delayed? To this end, the Yangtze River reporter interviewed Zhang **, director of the Office of the Green Committee of Wuhan University and secretary of the Party Committee of the Landscape Science Department, Nie Chaoren, senior engineer of Wuhan Academy of Garden Sciences and director of the Cherry Blossom Research Center, and Jiang Xiwang, second-level professor of the School of Life Sciences of Jianghan University and director of the China China Cherry Blossom Research Center of Jianghan University, to answer relevant questions.

This year's cold spring is rare, but it has little effect on the body of the cherry blossom trees.
Reporter: After two cold waves around the Spring Festival, especially after the Spring Festival, the temperature dropped sharply, accompanied by graupel and freezing rain, is this common in previous years? Will it affect the normal growth of cherry blossom trees?
Jiang Xiwang: The cold spring after the Spring Festival brings freezing rain and a sharp drop in temperature, which is indeed relatively rare in recent years, but it will not have any impact on the body of cherry trees, and the main ones that have a greater impact are camphor trees, pine trees, loquat trees and other evergreen plants in all seasons. In particular, there are many camphor leaves, and it is estimated that freezing rain and snow accumulation on the leaves will increase the weight of the tree by nearly 30 times, so the two snowfall and freezing rain weather around the Spring Festival caused a large number of camphor branches to break or lodging. The cherry blossom trees have no leaves in winter, and there are only a few of them blown down by strong winds, and the cherry blossom trees in Wuhan have not been affected by the general situation.

There are more than 70 varieties of cherry blossoms in Wuhan, and a small number of early cherry blossoms will be slightly inferior to previous years.
Reporter: After the Spring Festival, the temperature rose, and there was a sunny and warm weather of up to 20 at one point, which prompted the opening of several early cherry trees in Wuhan University. However, the recent cold spring has caused the temperature to plummet below 0, will Wuhan University and East Lake still be able to enjoy the cherry blossoms normally this year?
Nie Chaoren: There are several early cherry blossoms near the Wuhan University Hospital and the Fifth Teaching Building of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which have been opened at this time in previous years, and have been opened this year. However, because of the cold wave and freezing rain, the flower buds are frozen, and when the cold wave passes and blooms again, they are not as gorgeous as in previous years, and once frozen, they will fall faster, and the flowering period will become shorter. However, there are more than 70 species of cherry blossoms in the entire city of Wuhan, in addition to the campus of Wuhan University, there are also East Lake, Qingliangzhai Scenic Area, Guishan Park, Dijiao Park, Qingshan Park, and Sakuraxi Park in Dongxihu District. Most of them are mid-to-late cherry blossoms, such as Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms, which bloom in mid-to-late March in previous years, and when the temperature rises after the cold wave passes, the early cherry blossoms that have been closed before will bloom again, forming a romantic beauty of early, middle, and late cherry blossoms.

The cherry blossoms at Wuhan University are almost unaffected and are expected to bloom in mid to late March.
Reporter: When are the cherry blossoms expected to bloom at Wuhan University? Will this year be as gorgeous as ever?
Zhang**: In the past two days, I went to Wuhan University's Cherry Blossom Avenue, Kunpeng Square, and next to the administrative building to inspect the site, and found that the branches and buds of the cherry blossom tree have been slowly growing. Due to the heavy wind, rain and snow before the Spring Festival, several cherry blossom trees broke and fell down, and we are applying for relevant funds from the school to repair and replant.
Last year, the cherry blossoms at Wuhan University bloomed around March 20, and this year it is estimated that it will be delayed by a few days due to the cold wave, but it will also bloom in mid to late March, and it will last for about 10 to 12 days as usual. Wuhan University takes special care of cherry blossoms, and has fertilized and maintained the cherry blossom trees in the winter before the ice and snow to ensure that the cherry blossoms bloom smoothly in spring. The cherry blossom trees are deciduous trees, and the freezing disaster has little effect on them, but this year you can also see the beautiful and gorgeous cherry blossoms of Wuda.
The freezing rain before the flowers bloom may be a good thing, and Wuhan's cherry blossom economy can be expected this year.
Reporter: Wuhan's cherry blossoms are well-known throughout the country, will this year's freezing rain have an impact on Wuhan's cherry blossom economy?
Jiang Xiwang: Cherry blossoms are a beautiful business card of Wuhan, and every year during the cherry blossom season, a large number of tourists pour into Wuhan to enjoy the flowers, forming a cherry blossom economy. When the cherry blossoms first began to bloom in March last year, there was a big wind and rain, and the cherry blossoms withered early. This year's cold wave came early, and the low temperature and freezing rain weather after the Spring Festival may be a good thing for this year's cherry blossoms, and when the cold wave passes, the temperature rises, and the sunny weather behind is very suitable for the cherry blossoms to bloom. Wuhan's cherry blossom economy is expected to be expected this year, and it is expected that it is likely to recover to the level of 2019.
