In 1933, he joined the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and successively served as a soldier, squad leader, battalion commander, and instructor of the armed arts team. Feng Zigen, formerly known as Zan Changlin, was born in Guangyuan, Sichuan Province in 1918. There are six brothers and sisters in the family, and Feng Zigen is the fifth in the family.

When Feng Zigen was 15 years old, he was catching up with the Red Army's Long March and passing through Guangyuan, Sichuan, where the Red Army vigorously promoted the policy of "fighting local tyrants and dividing land", and many poor peasant families were allocated land and lived a relatively stable life.

Feng Zigen joined the Red Army without hesitation, and in this highly disciplined contingent that loved the people like a son, Feng Zigen actively accepted the influence of revolutionary ideology and tempered a tenacious fighting spirit in the baptism of battle.
