Studies have shown that HPV (human papillomavirus) infections in China have a 'bimodal' distribution by age group, with the first peak being 17-24 years old and the second peak being 40-44 years old, with college students being the key group in the first peak. Professor Sui Long, Shanghai Cervical Cancer Elimination Public Welfare Ambassador and Director of the Cervical Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, said.
March 4, 2024 is the 6th International HPV Awareness Day, and the theme activity of the International HPV Awareness Day Health Education Campus Tour was held at the Handan Campus of Fudan University.
Cervical cancer is one of the three most common malignancies that threaten women's health worldwide. The data shows that the incidence of cervical cancer in China is the second highest in the world, and it is increasing year by year, and showing a younger trend, fortunately, it is the first malignant tumor that can be prevented.
Sui Long pointed out that the World Health Organization has put forward the global strategic goal of achieving the "90-70-90" to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer by 2030, that is, 90% of girls before the age of 15 complete HPV vaccination, 70% of women aged 35-45 receive high-quality cervical cancer screening, and 90% of women diagnosed with cervical lesions receive **. In China, the HPV vaccination rate is not high, the screening coverage is insufficient, and the diagnosis and treatment are not timely and standardized, and the situation of cervical cancer prevention and treatment is still very serious. Therefore, China has actively responded to the call of the WHO, and ten national ministries and commissions have jointly issued the Action Plan for Accelerating the Elimination of Cervical Cancer (2023-2030), actively exploring the establishment of a comprehensive prevention and treatment model for cervical cancer that integrates HPV vaccination, cervical cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment, and assistance.
Medical experts introduce the importance of cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccination to university students.
HPV vaccination is the most cost-effective intervention to prevent HPV infection and cervical cancer, especially for young girls, who are likely to trigger a better immune response and obtain the best prevention effect. Sui Long said that this campus trip is aimed at college students, a key group of people with the first peak of HPV infection, hoping to further improve the awareness of teachers and students on the prevention of HPV infection and cervical cancer.
As early as 2022, under the active advice of Sui Long and other experts, "encouraging women of appropriate age to receive cervical cancer vaccines, and promoting cervical cancer vaccination for female minors of appropriate age in accordance with relevant regulations" was written into the "Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on the Protection of Women's Rights and Interests". Before the event, the organizers conducted a simple survey on college students' awareness of the prevention of HPV infection on campus, and found that although many students did not know much about the relevant science, they were very sympathetic to the necessity of vaccination, and hoped to have the opportunity to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
On the same day, the Shanghai Maternal and Child Health Center revealed that the center will lead many parties to cultivate 100 lecturers and 1,000 lecturers in the city through the "combination of medical and education" method, and jointly promote the promotion of HPV vaccination among adolescents. At the same time, it actively builds a platform for medical and educational science popularization resources, and carries out science popularization activities suitable for women of different ages.
At the same time, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital affiliated to Fudan University said that the hospital also set up the first adolescent sex education public welfare science popularization lecturer group in a domestic specialized hospital, imported the concept of HPV infection prevention to more than 150 primary and secondary schools in Shanghai and primary and secondary school students in the Yangtze River Delta, Yunnan and other regions "into the campus", and at the same time carried out nearly 100 offline health interactive activities for white-collar women, and "into the community" to popularize cervical cancer prevention and control knowledge for middle-aged and elderly people in the form of lectures, so as to promote cervical cancer prevention and treatment.
The event was jointly organized by Shanghai Maternal and Child Health Center, Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University (Shanghai Red House Hospital), the Youth League Committee of Fudan University and the University Hospital.
