In this graduate interview, we invited Red Xiao, who recently received an offer from New York University to major in economics in the second stage of the early application process, to share with us his learning experience, application process and experience suggestions at Nuomei.
Small class sizes & warm teachersI switched to Novomy in the pre-stage, and at that time, my parents and I valued the small class size of Novo. After coming to Nuomei to study, the small class size made me feel that the teachers paid a lot of attention to me, and the teachers of each course knew my learning situation very well and gave me more targeted guidance. In my opinion, Nuomei is not a school that forces "chicken blood", does not "roll up and die", but gives a lot of opportunities for independent choice. Students who have spare time can spend more time taking advanced courses, such as taking IPQ, EPQ and post-high school courses, and other students can also choose the learning mode that suits them, and the teacher will arrange after-class tutoring and Q&A courses. The teachers also made me feel very warm, such as my ninth-grade homeroom teacher, Ms. Carol, who was not only very capable of business, but also very good to every classmate in private, even if she was no longer my homeroom teacher, she was still very enthusiastic to help me when I had anything to do. During the application process, because I applied to both the UK and the United States, and Mr. Carol graduated from Cambridge University, he provided me with a lot of advice and information on applying for the UK. When writing the essay, Liu Bo and my economics teacher Scarlett also used their break time to give me a lot of revisions.
A wide range of interests on how to choose a majorI am a person with a wide range of interests and hobbies, so I am not sure which one to choose when choosing a major, my counselor and I analyze the future career involved in my interests and hobbies, combined with my personality, helped me determine the general direction of economics and finance, and then combined with the difficulty of admission, etc., and finally determined the economic direction of application. Through my experience, I suggest that many students who have a wide range of interests and are difficult to choose should communicate with the counselors, who have a richer understanding of society and employment than us, and will stand more practical than us. In addition, based on my experience, I also suggested that the younger students should determine their major direction as soon as possible, and the exams should be completed early, and almost all of my exams this time were squeezed into the 11th grade, which was a bit too busy, so although I scored 108 on the TOEFL test and 1510 on the SAT, I had a lot less time to do activities.
Hustle and bustle in the applicationThere are two difficult stages in the application process. The first is to write the paperwork. Since I want to apply for both English and America, I have to write a lot of essays according to the characteristics of different schools and different majors. Although the number of words in each article is not very large, it is still very brain-intensive to express one's own characteristics in this limited space. I had to keep communicating with the counselor, and at the same time, I read a lot of essays written by others on the Internet. The essay I submitted to NYU was reminded by my advisor during the summer vacation that I was starting to conceive. At first, I wanted to write about some of the insights I gained from one of my hobbies, mountain climbing, but I felt that this was not unique enough, so I overturned and rewrote it. When I was looking for ideas, I suddenly remembered that I picked up a branch of a gardenia when I was a child, and at that time I read the Internet and said that I could try to plant it, so I tried it according to the method on the Internet, and it really worked. I combined this experience with my other passion, game design, and designed a card game with the aim of using a variety of influences to save the gardenia. I felt that this unique experience and project could fully reflect the uniqueness of the document, so I mainly wrote about the beginning and end of the game design and the feelings I had in it. Another difficult process is the pressure from classmates during the application season. Around December, my classmates have received their favorite offers one after another, and there is no news from the school I applied to, and I was very anxious at that time, but at this time, there is nothing else I can do except wait for the result, so I can only try not to think about it and avoid continuing to fall into anxiety. Therefore, I hope that the younger students will not be too anxious at this stage, and they will do everything that should be done in the early stage of application, and just wait for the flowers to bloom at this time.
Thank you Red Xiao for sharing. Red Xiao must have had many hectic and anxious moments on his application path, and through his sharing, I hope that Nuomei students can bravely face every difficult moment in the application season.
