Over the past year, interest and use of Biological Intelligence (GEAI) has increased rapidly. GEA uses foundational models, including large language models (LLMs) trained on large amounts of data. The well-known GEAL base model is Opeal's GPT-35 and GPT-4They are the basis of the chatbots ChatGPT and Big Chat1. These tools can be used for human-generated content such as text, audio, images, and more. Other examples of GEAL tools include Google Bard, Clade, and Midtry. This technology is also increasingly integrated into other digital tools.
Although Genal isn't new, recent advancements in the underlying technology and greater accessibility mean it's now easier for the public to use it. This presents both opportunities and challenges for the education sector.
The Digital Strategy Department of the Ministry of Education (DE) asked HM **'s Open Innovation Team (OIT) to explore the opportunities and risks of GenAI in education.
This report contains interviews with teachers and educators from 23 educational institutions, 14 interviews with experts from academia and the educational technology (EDTech) industry, a range of quantitative data sources, and insights from key topics in the academic and grey literature.
The report covers:
How the department is responding to and adopting GenAI technology.
Applications and opportunities of genai in education.
Reported impacts and benefits of genai use in education.
Barriers to adoption and risks that GenAI brings to education.
The department wants to receive support from de and **.
