Today (3 March) marks the 11th World Wildlife Day.

The white dolphin population in Leizhou Bay has grown steadily.

Known as the "giant panda of the sea", the Chinese white dolphin has only about 6,000 in the world, and is a national first-class key protected wild animal. Leizhou Bay, located in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, is home to nearly 1,000 Chinese white dolphins, making it the second largest Chinese white dolphin population in the world. The latest monitoring shows that the white dolphin population in Leizhou Bay is growing steadily.

Coral reefs made of stony corals are known as underwater rainforests with colorful colors and rich biodiversity. Since 2011, researchers from the South China Sea Institute of Tropical Oceanography in Hainan have used the latest propagation technology to breed nearly 600,000 corals on a large scale in the waters of Phoenix Island, gradually regaining the vitality of this once-tarnished sea. These artificial corals are self-propagating, and the total number of these corals now reaches one million, making them veritable coral gardens.

Chen Hong, Director of Hainan South China Sea Institute of Tropical Oceanography: We continue to study coral seedling technology, coral seedling and seabed fixation technology, as well as the use of robots to release coral artificial reefs and other technologies, which will greatly improve the efficiency and speed of coral ecological restoration in Sanya.

As an important natural distribution area of corals in China, there are 137 species of corals distributed in the entire Sanya sea area, of which 108 species are distributed in the Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve. At present, coral has become an iconic species in Sanya, and protecting corals is of great significance to promote the ecological protection of the South China Sea.
