Nanyang Technological University in Singapore will establish a new faculty to deepen the university's investments and efforts in artificial intelligence (AI), computing, and data science.
The newly established School of Computing and Data Science will serve as a platform to offer industry-relevant degree programs that prepare students to become not only proficient in AI, but also proficient in using it. It will also accelerate interdisciplinary collaboration between computer science and other disciplines at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
The leadership of the new school is led by Luke Ong, Vice-Chancellor (Research) and University Distinguished Professor. Effective 1 May, the distinguished computer scientist will retire from his current position as Vice-Chancellor (Research) to take up the newly created position of Vice-Chancellor (Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy). In his new role, Professor Ong will be responsible for charting the future path for Nanyang Technological University as the world continues to be reshaped by computers. Nanyang Technological University will announce the new Vice-Chancellor (Research) in due course.
"As AI becomes a universal technology that is reshaping the world, universities like NTU have a responsibility to educate students on AI so they can thrive and help ensure that technology is moving in the right direction to make the world a better place," said Professor Ho Tak Wah, President of Nanyang Technological University. "The new School of Computing and Data Science is our answer to this new era of computing. The goal of our new faculty is to nurture a Nanyang Technological University community that will stay ahead of the curve in the age of artificial intelligence. By doing so, we can better support Singapore's ambition to become a trusted major AI hub. ”
Professor Ho, who is also the Founding Executive Chairman of the Singapore Association for Artificial Intelligence, added: "In addition to the establishment of the new School, we have appointed our first Vice-Chancellor (Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy) to examine how AI can be integrated into the day-to-day functions of NTU to make us stronger, smarter and more efficient overall. As a computer scientist, Professor Luke Ong is well-versed in the language of AI and is ideally suited to guide NTU's AI strategy in his dual role. ”
These key developments are part of Nanyang Technological University's strong push for the next wave of AI growth. Earlier this month, Nanyang Technological University launched a new series of academic programmes to nurture socially conscious AI talent and develop human-centred AI solutions.
The new academy coordinates AI research and education
NTU's new School of Computing and Data Science will combine the strengths of NTU's School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) with other related disciplines to form NTU's sixth academic school.
Professor Ong is a computer scientist by profession and the Chief Scientist of Artificial Intelligence in Singapore, and he will also serve as the Founding Dean of the School and lead the work of the School.
The School will operate within the physical facilities of the University and upgrade the existing computer infrastructure to improve the overall educational experience of students.
The college's nine undergraduate programs and five graduate programs will be offered by the new school's three divisions of artificial intelligence, data science, and computing. The new college is expected to enroll more than 4,800 students in the new academic year, which begins in August 2024.
In line with the University's commitment to lifelong learning, the College will increase its Continuing Education and Training (CET) work in AI and computing by 30% each year. It will achieve this by introducing new industry-relevant CET courses in artificial intelligence, data science, and computing, including:
Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, with a new specialization in Generative Artificial Intelligence
CET Professional Certificate in Data Science Ethics
CET Professional Certificate in Artificial Intelligence
The School will promote collaboration between the Department of Computer Science and other disciplines by establishing the following research platforms:
the Generative AI Lab, which studies the theory and practice of generative AI;
The Center for Cyber Security and Digital Trust, which will promote basic and translational research in cyber security and digital trust, based on **-funded research projects;
Institute for Computing and Society; will examine the impact of AI and computing on human civilization and how AI can help solve the major challenges facing humanity; and the DSAI-4-X Center, which will promote interdisciplinary research and education related to data science and AI, and develop new interdisciplinary scientific areas using AI.
A new senior leadership role to guide NTU's development in the era of artificial intelligence.
Professor Ong will take up the new Vice-President (Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy) from 1 May. In this new role, he will design and implement the University's AI strategy to support the University's functions in a safe and responsible manner. This includes driving AI initiatives that provide personalized learning experiences for students, supporting teachers in leveraging AI to advance their work, and helping to make data-driven decisions in areas such as resource allocation.
He has extensive expertise and international experience in the fields of mathematics, informatics, and computer science. Prior to joining Nanyang Technological University, Professor Ong was Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. In 2017, he was recognized as a co-winner of the Alonzo Church Prize for his outstanding contributions to the fields of logic and computing.
"AI technology can present some risks and challenges, but if used properly, it can also present opportunities, such as replacing heavy lifting, allowing us to focus our time and energy where it is most valuable," said Professor Ong. Over the next few months, I will be consulting with students and teachers about their wishes and concerns as they integrate AI into their work. ”
Professor Ong received his B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, respectively.

prof ong said: “ai technologies may pose several risks and challenges, but also opportunities when properly utilised, such as taking away the drudge work so that we can focus our time and effort where it is most valuable. over the next few months, i will be consulting with both students and faculty to learn what their aspirations and concerns are when it comes to integrating ai into their work.”
prof ong completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the university of cambridge and completed his postgraduate diploma and doctorate degree in computer science from cambridge and imperial college london, respectively.
