After the rainy season, under the moisture of the spring rain, all things in nature begin to wake up. Although it has been raining continuously recently, the warm and sunny weather in late February has finally triggered the switch for magnolia flowering. The magnolia bloom is a little later than usual, but it is still the most gorgeous scenery in spring.

The extra-red 'Wudang magnolia' is only a small part of the magnolia that has bloomed so far, and most of them are still in the early flowering stage. According to the weather forecast, combined with the phenological observation records of previous years, a small wave of flowers will be ushered in on March 5. Most magnolia and magnolia varieties will bloom intensively after March 10 when temperatures stabilize above 10. The Magnolia and Star Magnolia varieties usually open in late March. The yellow magnolia varieties are also in full bloom even later, and they can only be seen at the end of March.

In recent years, the Shanghai Botanical Garden has strengthened the research on the suitable breeding of magnolia plants, and presided over a number of magnolia projects, such as the first financial forestry science and technology promotion demonstration project "Demonstration of the Promotion and Demonstration of New Excellent Varieties of Dwarf Magnolia and Breeding Technology".

Recently, the Shanghai Botanical Garden is in chargeCase study of the project "Comprehensive Protection of Baohua Magnolia, an Endemic and Endangered Plant in China".(Click to jump to learn more) was selected into the first issue of BGJOURNAL, the official journal of the International Union for Botanic Gardens Conservation (BGCI), in 2024. The researchers of Shanghai Botanical Garden will continue to work hard to protect and develop the rare and endangered plant resources of the Magnoliaceae family, hoping to "add more flavor" to the city flower family in the future!
