In Nottingham Forest's match against Liverpool, Premier League referee Paul Tierney was disqualified from next weekend's whistle due to a controversial final decision, according to Promotion.com. The decision was made after the Forest team filed a formal complaint with the refereeing body, PGMOL.
Forest were furious at Nunez's decision before the winning header in the 99th minute. Tierney awarded possession to Liverpool goalkeeper Keleher instead of returning it to Forest, a decision that came just two minutes after the goal. Tierney also extended stoppage time beyond the scheduled eight minutes, causing chaos at the City Stadium.
Forest boss Marinakis questioned Tierney on the pitch, first-team coach Reid was sent off and former referee Clattenburg was denied access to the dressing room. A fan stormed the pitch, adding to the post-match chaos.
Although some fans accused the Premier League and PGMOL of favouring Liverpool, Tierney's decision was more of a mistake than a manipulation. Refereeing issues have been in the spotlight in the Premier League this season, with poor refereeing also causing Liverpool to lose to Tottenham.
Now, the Premier League needs to consider how to improve the standards of refereeing and ensure accountability and consistency in refereeing to restore fairness and integrity in the game.
