Seven-time Ligue 1 champions Lyon have announced that coach Grosso, who has only been in charge for two and a half months, has been sacked due to poor performance in the team, and youth team coach Pierre Sachi will be the manager. Previously, Lyon had a poor run in Ligue 1 and were at the bottom of the table, losing 2-0 at home to Lille last weekend, which was the trigger for Grosso's dismissal.
In an official statement, FC Lyon said: "After an in-depth analysis of the situation in the squad, it has been decided to terminate the employment contract of Fabio Grosso's coaching staff early and the club thanks him and his team for their hard work and professionalism.
Grosso took charge on 16 September when he signed a one-year contract with Lyon, but he was unable to turn the team around, winning just one and drawing four in seven games, picking up five points. After 13 rounds of Ligue 1, Lyon are bottom of the table with only seven points, five points off the safety zone. In addition to the team's poor performance, Grosso was also attacked during his time in charge of Lyon.
During a trip to Marseille, Lyon's bus was attacked by extreme Marseille fans, and Grosso was hit on the head by a stone thrown by the fans, bleeding profusely and with 12 stitches on his left eyebrow bone. The attack caused serious physical and psychological trauma to Grosso, and also led to him becoming the shortest-serving manager in Lyon's history, with the fewest games.
The previous record holder was Brazilian Silvinho, who took charge of Lyon for four months in 2019 and managed 11 games. Although Grosso's time at Lyon was short, he was a good professional footballer.
Grosso is a left-back who played for the Italian national team and performed well at the 2006 World Cup, being praised as the "great Italian left-back" by the famous commentator Huang Jianxiang, who played a great role in Italy's championship victory.
After retiring as a player, Grosso began coaching Juventus' youth team and spent the following years moving through a number of small and medium-sized clubs, including Bari, Verona, Brescia, Sion and Frosinone. However, Grosso's coaching experience is still far from a big manager, especially if a big club like Lyon needs a more experienced manager.
Lyon won seven Ligue 1 titles in a row from 2001-02 to 2007-08 and became a true dominance in Ligue 1, but in the last four seasons, Lyon has lost its former glory. They finished in the top four once, seventh twice and eighth once, and have long since lost their title. As a result, Lyon will need a more experienced and capable manager to lead the team back to the top.
Lyon's situation is not optimistic, and they cannot compare with Paris, Marseille, Monaco and Nice, both in terms of squad and financial resources. At present, relegation has become their most important task. In contrast to Grosso's dismal dismissal, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xavi Alonso appears to be in high spirits.
In the 5th round of the Europa League in the early hours of this morning Beijing time, Bayer Leverkusen defeated Hogan 2-0 away, achieving 14 consecutive wins in all competitions and continuing to refresh the team's all-time record. When Alonso took over Bayer Leverkusen midway through last season, the team were in the 17th-place relegation zone. However, at the end of the season, the pharmaceutical company managed to break through the difficulties and finish sixth in the league and qualify for the Europa League.
Bayer Leverkusen have made great strides again this season, winning 18 and drawing one in all competitions (the only draw came against Bayern Munich in the third round of the Bundesliga), scoring 64 goals and conceding just 14. At present, Bayer Leverkusen have achieved great success on all three fronts of the Bundesliga, Europa League and German Cup.
In the Bundesliga, they have 11 wins and 1 draw in 12 rounds, ahead of Bayern's 10 wins and 2 draws; In the Europa League, they secured the top spot in the group with a record of five winsThey also managed to qualify for the round of 16 in the German Cup. Spain's Radio Serre reports that Real Madrid have seen Alonso as the perfect man for Carlo Ancelotti.
If Carlo Ancelotti is unable to reach a contract extension, Alonso could be the favourite to become Real Madrid's boss next season. As a midfield talent who has been unanimously recognised by top managers such as Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, it seems only a matter of time before Alonso joins the ranks of top managers.
