Sikorski develops an airplane

Sikorski is not only a master of design, he has also achieved considerable success in the development of aircraft.

The first aircraft he designed, the S-1, was a light biplane with a pilot's cockpit located in the lower wing and a 15-horsepower engine mounted on the wing. Sikorsky himself was not only a designer, but also a pilot, but the S-1 failed to really fly.

On June 3, 1910, Sikorski took off for the first time in a test flight of the S-2 biplane of his own design, flying a distance of 200 meters and a flight time of 12 seconds. This made him experience the charm of flying for the first time, and it was very exciting. But on July 3, during another test flight, the plane fell into the canyon, the plane was destroyed, and he almost died.

Sikorski continued to refine his design, and successively developed the S-3, S-4, and S-5 aircraft. On May 17, 1911, Sikorski flew the S-5 into the air, and at an altitude of 100 meters, the plane turned freely, and landed again on the take-off site four minutes later. In September of the same year, he set four all-Russian flight records in this aircraft: at an altitude of 500 meters;Range 85 km;Flight time 52 minutes; The flight speed is 125 kilometers per hour. In the same year, he obtained a pilot's license from the International Air Federation.

On December 29, 1911, a crew of three pilots led by him set the first world flight record in the newly developed S-6 aircraft: a speed of 111 kilometers per hour.

In 1913, Sikorsky marched into large aircraft, developed the four-engine biplane S-6B "Russian Warrior", and personally flew the first flight in May of the same year, flying for 10 minutes at an altitude of 250 meters. At the end of the year, Sikorsky developed the world's first heavy bomber, Ilya Muromets. The crew of the aircraft is 4 8 people, with a bomb load of 400 kg. The first flight was successful on December 11. On June 5, 1914, piloted by Sikorski, the "Ilya Muromets" flew 6 hours and 33 minutes with a range of 650 kilometers with five passengers on board. Achieved the record for the longest flight time.

Sikorski settled in the United States in 1919. Later, the Sikorski company was established to engage in aircraft manufacturing, and designed and manufactured various types of seaplanes.
