Foreword: This is ***Study abroad in SouthAn article on how to choose the direction of application and employment advantages of XJTLU Urban Planning and Architecture.

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is the result of the cooperation between Xi'an Jiaotong University, a famous 985 university in China, and the University of Liverpool, one of the founding members of the Russell Group of Universities.

XJTLU's Computer Science, Engineering and Social Sciences disciplines are all ranked in the top 1% of the world's ESI subject rankings, and XJTLU is also ranked 46th in Chinese mainland universities in the QS World University Rankings 2021.

At present, XJTLU has become the largest Sino-foreign cooperative university in China, with more than 20,000 students and more than 1,600 faculty members from 89 countries and regions around the world.

Let's take a look at the statement of a senior sister studying at XJTLU

I may not be the same as most of the students in RAC because I started out in urban planning, even though our major also includes urban design. My interest in urban planning mainly comes from studying geography in high school and my interest in urban culture itself. Social responsibility and humanistic care are also important aspects that attracted me who had just finished my high school Chinese studies.

I don't regret the change of business to planning!

I came from the business category because I felt that my idealistic personality could not handle some of the professional temperaments that I had learned in business. Since urban planning is a very multidisciplinary profession, the scope of professional courses and forms of assessment are also very diverse. After entering the third year, most of the planning courses mainly focus on the form of assessment, interspersed with presentations (typical real estate courses require students to put forward project plans from the perspective of real estate developers and justify themselves). In addition to these, other courses include design assignments with a focus on posters and PRE, and other courses that focus on data analysis and software manipulation (ArcGIS). In fact, after in-depth study, I observed that many students, including me, have their own expertise, such as some students are not very good at writing, but they always have the patience to polish their design works over and over again. Some students have a very good grasp of data visualization and other skills, but the concepts in the design assignment are not outstanding. And I belong to the kind of people who are good at water** (not) but have a very lack of space and design will...This also paved the way for my later academic choices and fate with RAC.

From the perspective of planning and design, on the whole, I have no regrets about planning. This part not only allows me to sustenance my emotions and imagination about the city, involving some of my preferred humanities and social sciences (such as urban sociology, etc.), but also gives me the identity that I can be qualified and able to promote social development, that is, I can effectively participate in the arteries of economic and social development (such as entering the ** sector and entering the real estate sector). However, the design was slightly awkward for me. I briefly devoted myself to the study of design for the sake of course average scores and a wider range of graduate options, but the process of learning made me feel not only the lack of design inspiration and talent, but also the values and meaning of planning. Together, these experiences led to my conflicts and anxieties during the graduate application process, including applying for a portfolio and making a portfolio.

There is no standard answer to the paper, so don't stretch the polishing time too long.

Since my major is directly aligned, the theme of my essay revolves around thinking about the role of planner during my undergraduate experience. Because it combines a lot of practical experience, it is very personal (which is what my essay teacher has always emphasized). My essay writing process was relatively smooth and didn't take long. Here I would like to remind students that if you are applying for the corresponding major of your undergraduate major, try not to prolong the essay polishing time too much (so to say that the essay polishing is probably the most time-consuming in the entire preliminary process), some students around me are perfectionists, but the essay itself has no standard answer and authority. The students and the essay teacher changed each other, for fear that the final patchwork would not be as good as the first version, but it would also delay the application time.

You can apply to top universities without a portfolio.

The reason for studying abroad for a master's degree is not complicated, and with the depreciation of academic qualifications, going abroad for graduate school is still very cost-effective for the fierce and decaying construction and urban planning job market. For the reasons I mentioned above, I will definitely apply for further study in planning-related majors, which are the ones I applied for later.

After a long period of investigation, I finally chose RAC

In the first semester of my junior year, I chose RAC after visiting a number of portfolio institutions in Suzhou, out of the desire to improve my design level and increase the possibility of applying for graduate studies. However, a semester has passed and my portfolio has barely progressed....This is not only due to my busy schoolwork, but also because I don't like design and procrastinate.

Although all the teachers were very good, and Mr. Gray still urged me to speed up my progress during the winter vacation, I was actually very tormented at that time...Design is like a big obstacle that comes out halfway, and I didn't pay much attention to it at first, but due to the anxiety of applying for graduate school and the various pressures I faced in design classes, my anxiety was infinitely magnified. At that time, I was in a kind of contradiction of "I didn't think about the design or planning in the future, but I was forced to do it if I didn't sign up for the portfolio at that time, and I might not be able to finish the portfolio, and I wanted to gap". In addition, the facts also tell me that the difficulty and effort of applying for a portfolio of urban design projects at UCL is no less than that of being the first in the first grade. However, the truth is that every time I design a course on **, it is very difficult and painful, and I often skip the tutorial of the school because of no progress (tears)...

After missing a series of complicated mental journeys, I struggled for a long time during the winter break, and finally proposed to RAC to terminate the project and refund part of the money. I'm a self-aware person who hates self-torture, and I'd rather cut through the mess in the face of such contradictions, preferring to pay the sunk cost upfront than do something I don't like to do.

In fact, I want to emphasize that whether it is design or planning, we must understand ourselves while understanding the information of the research application. This kind of choice is more often seen in the choice of the major of the graduate program, what do we really like, and what are we really willing to pay for it. Just like my architectural professional friend, I'd rather GAP a year, I'd rather stay up late every day than give up on UCL's architectural design project. But I think at some point he will also be influenced by students who give up their design direction and apply for architectural history majors that are easier to get offers. He will also secretly think to himself and even be sad, whether I am too persistent, whether the professional direction is not so important. But as I can see, my friend has also persevered until now (also studying in RAC hahaha friendly nomination of classmate Zheng).

For students who do not meet the standards, the employment rate will also decrease. Take this opportunity to use the Internet and offline guaranteed admission institutions to achieve a high probability of successful admission. In recent years, guaranteed admission institutions have also become one of the media communication channels used by students at home and abroad, which can achieve a large range of reasons for school-enterprise cooperation, and promote the help of students to successfully study in well-known universities at home and abroad. However, when we select institutions, we also need to rely on whether the research institutions meet the requirements in all aspects in order to achieve an accurate and high standard acceptance rate. The higher the institution's standards, the higher the chances of success.
