Q: On December 11, the spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS) issued a statement expressing concern about the recent provocative and dangerous actions of Chinese ships against Philippine vessels in the South China Sea. Do you have any comment?
A: Recently, without China's permission, Philippine vessels illegally intruded into China's islands and reefs in the South China Sea, including Scarborough Shoal and Ren'ai Jiao, and collided with Chinese coast guard vessels at the scene in a dangerous manner, seriously violating China's sovereignty and endangering the safety of Chinese vessels and personnel. The China Coast Guard has taken necessary measures against Philippine vessels in accordance with China's domestic and international laws, and has operated them professionally, with restraint, reasonableness and lawfulness. China has lodged solemn representations with the Philippine side in this regard, expressing its strong support.
Ignoring the facts, the EU issued a statement accusing China of legitimate and lawful maritime rights protection and law enforcement actions, and endorsing the illegal provocations of the Philippines, which China firmly opposes. We urge the EU to earnestly respect China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea, and respect the efforts of regional countries to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.
