China's dairy industry is in green and low-carbon transformation
In the process of low-carbon transformation of the global economy, the dairy industry is one of the most international industries, and at the same time, it has an ultra-long industrial chain and a relatively high proportion of carbon emissions, so the green and low-carbon transformation of China's dairy industry has become imperative.
Research data shows that cattle need 20 times more land to produce protein per unit of protein than legumes, and cattle produce 20 times more greenhouse gas emissions. The annual greenhouse gas emissions of a high-yielding cow are equivalent to those of a car (according to the displacement of 1.).0, 10,000 kilometers a year is roughly calculated). From the perspective of the global consumer market, 45% of consumers are already inclined to buy low-carbon products.
Judging from the feedback from the capital market, a large number of international investment institutions have signed industry initiatives to address climate change, putting forward higher requirements for the carbon management of invested enterprises.
The domestic green finance market is developing rapidly, and green financial products such as green credit, green bonds, green finance, and carbon finance will also become important financing channels.
Mengniu Qujing factory obtained zero carbon factory certification
In order to promote the implementation of the green strategy, Mengniu Dairy has formulated 15 topics and 28 specific actions to ensure that the work of the "green strategy" is visualized and quantifiable, and has achieved gratifying results.
In 2022 alone, Mengniu's room temperature milk factory in Qujing obtained the first international and domestic dual certification of China's dairy industry, becoming an out-and-out "zero-carbon factory".
Mengniu's Yashili Rui Pu Enjing to Toddler Formula 750 product has obtained the product carbon neutrality certificate, achieving relatively zero greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition, Mengniu's Shengmu Ranch has successively planted more than 97 million sand trees in Ulanqab and the desert, transformed the desert area of 410,000 mu, and achieved a total of 1.11 million tons of ecological carbon sequestration.
With its long-term practice of low-carbon development, Mengniu's three excellent practice reports on energy conservation and emission reduction have also been favored by the United Nations Global Compact, and the three cases have been simultaneously included in the United Nations (UNGC) dual carbon casebook, which has become the focus of attention in the industry, and its various low-carbon development measures have also provided useful references for other enterprises.
On February 22, 2023, the United Nations Global Compact held a launch ceremony for the report "Corporate Carbon Neutrality Goal Setting, Action and Global Cooperation: Implementing the Global Development Initiative and Accelerating the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" at the International Convention Center in Shanghai.
Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China, delivered a wonderful speech, saying: "This report sets out the best practices of the world's leading companies in various industries to reduce emissions, and extracts useful inspiration from them, further proving the practical significance of corporate carbon neutrality actions guided by climate science.
In addition, he also fully affirmed and praised the report's theoretical analysis of the global macro environment and corporate climate goal setting standards, and introduced the progress of key carbon neutrality measures implemented by key industry representatives in their internal operations and all links of the value chain.
At the upstream milk source, Mengniu's two major animal husbandry companies, Shengmu and Modern Dairy, have reached the leading level in China in terms of carbon emissions from raw milk, which is comparable to that of developed countries. In particular, Shengmu has planted more than 90 million trees in Ulan Bu and the desert over the past ten years, creating an organic pasture in a desert oasis that attracts global attention.
On the production side, Mengniu has 22 state-level green factories that fully apply renewable energy such as solar energy and biogas power generation, and some of the plant's sewage treatment facilities have achieved "zero-carbon" operation. In addition, Mengniu has also pioneered the application of "post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR)" as a product packaging film, reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions on a large scale.
In the downstream logistics link, Mengniu has launched the "Green Elf" plan, which comprehensively replaces the traditional corrugated boxes with digital environmentally friendly turnover boxes, which can save 7 percent of paper per year80,000 tons of base paper, 2.06 million trees were cut down, and 1,680 tons of carbon dioxide emissions were reduced.
From production, processing to packaging, Mengniu Group has integrated the low-carbon strategy into the entire dairy industry chain, and the ecological cases it has practiced are also influencing and driving the coordinated low-carbon development of more industrial chains, becoming a practitioner and pioneer in energy conservation and carbon reduction.
The responsibility of the dairy industry in a big country
For Chinese enterprises, carbon reduction is an important part of ESG, and it is also the only way for the development of the times, and the social responsibility that must be assumed. Over the years, Mengniu, as the "national team" and leading enterprise of China's dairy industry, and one of the top seven dairy companies in the world, has been widely recognized by authoritative institutions at home and abroad. From 2020 to 2022, Mengniu was selected as a constituent stock of the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index series and the Hang Seng ESG 50 Index for three consecutive years, ranking among the top 30 of 4,000 Hong Kong listed companies, and was recognized by the capital market as one of the most outstanding companies in Hong Kong stock sustainabilityMengniu has been ranked first in the dairy industry in the Corporate Social Responsibility Development Index of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for three consecutive yearsThis year, Mengniu's MSCI ESG rating jumped from BBB to A, the highest rating in China's food industry, setting a good example for Chinese companies. In the future, Mengniu will continue to practice a green, low-carbon, inclusive and sustainable development path, actively improve the efficiency of resource use, and build a green production mode. At the same time, Mengniu will share its experience extensively, actively drive its enterprises and partners in the industry to fulfill their social responsibilities, protect the ecological environment, jointly promote the sustainable development transformation of "green", and jointly "protect the common health of mankind and the earth".
