According to Reuters, the French antitrust authority fined Sony 13.5 million euros for abusing its dominant position in the PS4 gamepad** market.
According to the relevant agency, Sony has deployed a technical countermeasure system since November 2015 in order to combat piracy. The system affected the normal operation of third-party gamepads, causing them to frequently disconnect during console updates. Sony's crackdown on piracy, while legitimate, has taken measures that affect all unauthorized controllers.
On the other hand, opaque licensing policies have in some cases led to the inability of competing companies wishing to sell PS4-compatible controllers to integrate the so-called partner program "OLP", which is the only channel for third parties to obtain official authorizations and identification codes. By refusing to communicate with the manufacturer about the access criteria of the OLP program, Sony was able to apply them at its own discretion, although the latter was the only way to avoid disconnection.
The combination of these two practices has severely damaged the brand image of third-party manufacturers in front of players and distributors, slowing their expansion in the market and possibly even being driven out of the market.
