Xu Dunzhang, formerly known as Xu Yuanfeng, was born on the 10th day of the eighth lunar month in 1902 in Gaoshengwan, Zhongxingchang (now Huazhai Village, Dashi Township), Dianjiang County, Sichuan Province.

In the summer of 1918, he was admitted to Tsinghua School from Chengdu. At the end of August 1926, Xu Dunzhang completed his studies at Tsinghua University, went to the United States to study, and received his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin from 1928 to 1931. After returning to China in September 1931, Xu Dunzhang was hired as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science of Tsinghua University, and at the same time taught part-time at Yenching University and China University. In 1935, Xu Dunzhang served as the dean of the Law School of National Sichuan University, during which time he established the Southwest Institute of Social Sciences of Sichuan University and served as its first director.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xu Dunzhang was hired as a professor at Chongqing University. In 1950, Xu was hired by the University Board as chair of the Department of Political Science. In March 1951, Xu Dunzhang was transferred to Yenching University, and in January of the following year, they were sent to participate in the land reform. In 1952, when the faculties were adjusted, the Beijing University of Political Science and Law (now China University of Political Science and Law) was established, and Xu Dunzhang was ordered to transfer to the Beijing University of Political Science and Law and was appointed as the leader of the trade union group. At the Beijing University of Political Science and Law, he undertakes the so-called dual task, that is, on the one hand, he undertakes the training of cadres in the political and legal system, and on the other hand, he engages in normal political and legal education. On October 14, 1960, Xu Dunzhang died suddenly of illness at the age of 58.
