Wang Guangyi is a Chinese artist born in 1957 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. It is widely known as one of the main players in the Chinese Art Nouveau movement, which began in the 1980s. Wang Guangyi experienced *** 1966-1976 as the son of a railway worker in northeastern China). He spent three years in the countryside and became a railroad worker after his father retired. Although there was no hope of going to college at this time, he never gave up on this dream. After several failures, he was admitted to the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1984 with a degree in oil painting. He currently lives and works in Beijing, China. Wang Guangyi, Frozen Northern Polar Region, 65, 90cm, oil on canvas, 1985
The Frozen Polar Regions series is cold and barren in appearance, but the simplicity of the shapes and smooth brushstrokes depict the cold winter environment that was familiar to the young artist born in northern China. These paintings, which depict the polar regions of the North, are in fact not related to geographical features, but are depicted as a regional symbol of the birth of a new faith. The "Northern Polar" is a region where individuals must face themselves rather than society.

Wang Guangyi: "No matter how much I say that my works of this period have a neutral cultural attitude, in the eyes of others, there are still binary interpretations in them, and now I blur these and let art form a relationship with other things. ”

In my opinion, "anthropology" is a kind of knowledge of people's ** and self-knowledge, it is a kind of basic text of religion, and various races have different understandings of their own existence, from which complex beliefs arise. Early anthropological research was a purely disciplinary study, and before and after World War II, anthropological research was infused with a political element. The intervention of this political factor has led anthropological research to enter the stage of "cranial politics", when "cranial politics" and "phrenology" are combined with "racial hierarchy", and human beings as a whole have entered a great dilemma. This huge predicament has always affected the pattern and direction of today's world.

Wang Guangyi: The term "curtain of ignorance" is a concept in John Rawls's A Theory of Justice. Here I give this term a kind of "ambiguity", that is, when we do not know the hidden racial attributes behind these "faces", in fact, these "faces" present only the universal concept of "people". I use the technique of quasi-painting and the attitude of "innocent eyes" to express these "faces" in the state of "curtain of ignorance".
Wang Guangyi: The so-called "skull politics" of measuring the proportions of people's skulls and dividing them into racial hierarchies through powerful calipers has entered anthropological research and opened the longest nightmare ...... to date

In the artist's view, the viable way to end the nightmare caused by "skull politics" is through quasi-scientific analysis. This approach is "neutral" and objective, and the differences between the "faces" obtained by the analysis prove the complexity and richness of the original form of the species "man" at the time of creation.

Art is a contradiction for Wang Guangyi, who says, "Art is a creative activity. This kind of creation, a kind of giving, gives something to the object, just as I see a thousand troops in the pillar of light of a flashlight. Art should make people see things that have not been seen, think of things that have not been thought of, it is an uncertain thing. Art should be to discover something, illuminate something, make something ordinary, and make people enter a state of fantasy. ”
